Shoot to Loot

I first heard about the "Shoot to Loot" (STL) perk some months ago, then promptly forgot about it... Till it came up in a recent conversation.

The perk allows you to shoot at a white, green or purple ammo box from a distance, which will then refill your ammo for that particular primary, special or heavy slot.

Seems only a few of the green (uncommon) or blue (rare) guns have this perk - mostly scout or sniper rifles. Those who have them say a blue scout is the better choice - if given the choice - because your special is usually more important in a raid - for example.  And, some blue scouts are available that nearly reach the 300 attack level, which allows them to be useful.

One scout rifle I read about is the blue "Stalker BNGL", which has the perk. So, now I'll be looking at all the perks for the green/blue scouts/snipers I pick up on the field.... I can't count the number of them I've dismantled since the game dropped last fall.... I have read that more of the STL scouts/snipers drop in ROC strikes than anywhere else.... I don't know, but thought I'd pass it on...

Almost sounds too good to be true, but a google search will give an inkling of how many know about it. Incidentally, I've read where the Tower gunsmith occasionally sells a scout/sniper that has the perk.... I checked yesterday - he didn't have one...

I haven't seen any prefixes like that yet. I have seen increased pickup radius. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. Sounds intriguing, just not sure if it's practical enough to tote around

I just picked a green scout up the other with shoot to loot. It's useless for machine gun but a great way to refill rockets. At Crota, sweep the mobs out, then find a purple ammo drop (hopefully), switch guns, and shoot the drop multiple times to load up your heavy ammo.

After reading this post, I checked my three characters and found I had a blue scout rifle with this perk. I am going to level it up and see how it does. No explosive rounds, so I will keep an eye out from now on.

Checked the Tower gunsmith this morning. He had an all new set of green/blue guns, but none had the perk.

I've known for a long time that the Icebreaker could be used to generate ammo for another sniper rifle, like the arc sniper Patience & Time by simply swapping once the Icebreaker has built itself back to 6 rounds. I learned fairly recently that the Icebreaker can also be used to refill both the primary and heavy ammo slots. With no heavy ammo on you, empty your primary of ammo (helps to use a gun with a low ammo reserve like the exotic No Land Beyond because of its small ammo reserve), then kill stuff with the Icebreaker. Switch back to your preferred primary then scoop up the ammo that now litters the battlefield. Works well most times.

Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck at getting into any raids. Most of my gear is lucky engrams, or grinding marks. Not a whole lot of use for the prefix doing patrols and bounties. I will have to bow to your better judgement. Might be worth hanging onto one just in case I ever get into anything good

Just picked up a green sniper Hieracon-LR3 with STL from the Gunsmith...

I use my shoot to loot rifle for the Conflux phase in the Vault of Glass.  My spot is up on the platform, so its nice to have this as a tool to switch to.

I also found a green Hieracon-LR3 186 arc sniper with STL while glimmer farming on the Cosmo yesterday morning. I checked with the gunsmith before beginning the day, but he didn't have anything. Does he have different inventory for different players???  It's so cool to shoot ammo boxes from afar and have the ammo appear in your inventory.

I mentioned this to a couple who I frequently play with about the STL. They didn't know about it, so they started looking yesterday. Before the day ended they both had green scout rifles with STL, so it must not be all that hard to get one. I'll keep looking for that rare blue 294 scout with STL.

We did a VoG run last night, and the STL feature was valuable at the conflux. Right before getting the relic and beginning the Templar fight I spotted purple bricks out on the Hobgoblin sniper towers. Plenty of time to temporarily swap my Icebreaker for the Hieracon. Incidentally, the Templar went down pretty fast with 4 Gjallarhorns. Didn't have to burn an ammo syn.

We all see the same inventory at the gunsmith, but the stock is updated every few hours. i just got lucky that he had one in stock the first time I went looking for it.

STL has come in handy in a couple of situations for me already so it's worth having a gun with it available.

Thanks for the heads-up about an STL Scout at the gunsmith... bought one. Then later found a blue engram on the Cosmo that decoded to a blue Amina-E7 242 arc sniper with STL..

I'm thinking a Scout Rifle is better than a Special weapon for STL?

I kept running out of Special ammo and thus forcing the IB ammo gen switcheroo before using STL.

Do...do you guys really run out of ammo that frequently to necessitate Shoot To Loot?

Yup, always running low on heavy ammo because I use glimmer for gear upgrades rather than buying ammo synthesis.

With time being my most scarce resource, I just hate farming for glimmer on exclusion zone just to buy heavies.

And at least for me this isn't something I need to do a whole lot, but it is convenient to have the option.

Wait, when are you using this heavy ammo synthesis?  Heavy ammo, as a pretty general rule, doesn't drop as frequently.  Unless I'm getting impatient with the Omnigul dance, I very rarely use them in strikes and such.  I use about 99% of the heavy ammo synths I use during a raid.

Also, what I do about Glimmer: I save all those 200 Glimmer drops you get from each kind of creature (Silken Codex, House Banners, etc) and putt hem in the vault.  I cash them in when I'm low on normal Glimmer.  Its also a way to pump my available Glimmer up past 25k when I'm maxed out.

I was using heavy ammo syth a lot in Nightfall, level 30 weeklies, and more recently during raids. Now, between STL and the heavy ammo glitch I haven't purchased a synth in more than a week. As for glimmer, it wouldn't matter whether I put it in the vault or not, I still would have spent all of what I made. Plus I've never maxed out - closest I ever got was about 20K. I guess I manage glimmer about as well as I manage money in the real world.

If Juggler is a problem, you've got Icebreaker.  Icebreaker pretty much makes it so you just need to shoot things with your infinite ammo source and pick up the drops that way.  Voila.  Bunch of ammo!

Who needs Shoot to Loot? One example - for the Valus T'arc Nightfall/Weekly. The only way most people can do it is by getting below the ramp and behind the boxes - or way up high on the round structures. So, unless you have an Icebreaker and use it exclusively, you'll burn through your ammo syns. The Valus strike is the perfect situation for Shoot to Loot. You can't go out onto the floor to get ammo, but you can shoot to loot it.  Saves your expensive ammo syns for when there is no other choice.

I used it last night on the Omnigul NF strike. Couldn't go into the next room to pick up heavy ammo, but I could stay back in relative safety and STL it.

Same here - used STL in the Nightfall last night. Also during Crota standing on the middle ledge, saw a heavy brick down near the Swordbearer's door, used STL to pick it up. I have an Icebreaker but wanted the rocket rounds. Again, just a nice option to have.
