Looking for Advice/Help unlocking Thorn in PvP

So, I have the Thorn exotic bounty that I'd love to unlock.  I'm getting ready to harvest the moon for Hive points, then its on to the Crucible.  I have not played a single match in Crucible and this part really worries me, I don't know if I can get to the 500 points.  I do have a my Voidwalker class maxed out, so that is some help.  I would appreciate any/all advice and tips on how best to approach this part of the challenge as a complete Crucible newb.

Same boat here Hammer. I really want the Thorn cuz I luv hand cannons. Not a big crucible player either, but I have a void AR primary, void secondaries, void HMG/rocket and a Voidwalker Warlock. The 500 points doesn't sound like a lot, but you go backwards with every death. So, gotta be positive and use void.

Thought about taking the conservative path by staying back and using void grenades that track, nova that tracks and shoot anything else that comes near.

There are at least a couple here who have helped others get the Thorn bounty. Hope they chime in...

Working on it too. Minatour with a void primarily it may be easier. I seem to be getting 5 plus for void kills and 2 minus for dying. So its not a plus one for one neededing 500 k-d ratio.

Void primary?  Where can I find one of those?  I have not ran into any typed primaries.

Well, we make three, if we can find 2 more, can we swap in alt characters and just bang things out in Rumble?

If you have a warlock, that will be a HUGE help.  Ive abandoned that bounty twice because as a Titan i didnt have a real way to do void damage.  Now that I am more comfortable in crucible, I would probably do it.

Equip all void weapons (Shotgun and Rocket Launcher at least - Sniper and Heavy Machine Gun if you are a pro stone cold killer).  If you have Atheon's Epilogue from the raid, equip that too as it does void damage.  If you arent comfortable in Crucible, I would equip all intellect gear so your super is up as much as possible.

The secret to that bounty is DONT DIE.  You dont need to rush headlong to try to get kills - you will get those by accident.  Just dont die because it slows your progress by 40%. (kills = +5 points.  Deaths = -2).  Hang back, stay with the group and you will slowly get kills.  Its going to be a grind though.  At the end of it, you will be significantly better at crucible!

Good luck.

Excellent advice.

I did this with my Titan Defender, they have Spike grenades that do void damage. In Control matches at the capture points, throw them onto walls rather than floors and you'll get some kills that way.

I camped with the void grenades, shotgun and rocket launcher in Control matches and just ground it out. As stated you get the 5 points for void kills and -2 for any deaths, seemed like it was taking forever and then had a match where I went 10 and 0 for 50 points and the next one 16 and something to get me to 500. I'll never be great at Crucible but I'm better at it now because of the bounty.

Agreed I was surprised how quickly it went and did show signs of improvement in the crucible.  I am not that patient or talented so I loaded up the void comedian shotty bubble shielded control bases and have them come.  I was fortunate and got to play many matches with some less quality players who apparently didnt know I had over shield and tried to come in and exchange shotgun blasts.  I had some 20 plus kill games which was good for me.  Unfortunately next few matches were on bigger maps and more experienced people who just supered me or teamed up 2 or 3 and took the shield down and shot me from a distance.  I think you get 2 for assists too but not 100%.  I need to beat the unwed wizard then I think I get it now.

Good luck to you

The Void primary is Atheon's Epilogue and it's only from the raid. Truth be told though it's not very good in the Crucible.

I was able to knock this out in about 2 hours playing Control and camping like a noob in high traffic areas/paths for kills while basically ignoring the flags (yeah, I was being "that guy"). I did it using a void fusion rifle and void machine gun. Combine those kills with my voidwalker nades and nova bomb and it wasn't too bad. I'm bad with shotguns and rockets so I stuck with what works for me.

You don't necessarily need Legendary/Exotic void weapons either. The fusion rifle I had was a Rare and did just fine. Basically, if it's void then you want to use it. Also, do not ignore the heavy weapon ammo drops - I'm still amazed how many people do not run for it when it's called out.

You will be at a disadvantage having not played Crucible at all, but hopefully once you get a feel of the maps you can get a pattern down.

Yeah, I'm working on it now also. I echo what these guys said, it's not a straight 500 kills, so that helps. I 'm perfectly mediocre in the crucible, so I was a little worried about this part of the bounty, but I played about 4 hours of clash last night and got up to 375 points. Having a Warlock is key since grenades and melee are both void damage. I don't have a void primary, but I do have a void sniper and shotty, so I had to change my play style to use the shotgun more. It's really easier than it sounds.

Also, for the first part of the bounty, head to the doorway of the Teple of Crota and farm the two Knights that spawn there. They'll give you 20 points each kill and respawn every couple minutes. I knocked this part out in an hour: do a patrol mission, kill the knights, run throught the Temple of Crota, come back and kill the knights - rinse and repeat.

I banged that part out in two or three days.  Some maps are more condusive to it than others.  Big maps are now your friend.  That and Matt's Mom.  There are a couple of lanes where you can hang back and hold an area if the rest of your team plays along with it, or else it turns into a clusterfuck.  I did it with a void sniper and heavy machine gun, but it would have been a lot easier with some void grenades or something.

Von is also right about not dying.  Online games don't end when you get 50 points, it ends when the first team gives up 50 points.  Play more with that mindset and to try and work from a greater range, and you'll see your gamaple start to improve and start to notice all the little obvious sightlines that Bungie clearly shut down when you play the maps in order to combat what you're doing and to encourage more closer combat.  You know, closer combat where randomness starts to take over and the skill gap gets narrowed as peoples' super abilities start to affect you.

I'm also about to try this for the second time. Been working on building up my Athelon's Epilogue. Need to finish up 3 more strikes without dying first so I can work on 2 exotic bounties in the Crucible at  once.

Alright, I'm up to the Xyor the unwed strike now. If anyone wants to get together and knock that out let me know. I'm not about to try it solo just yet. I'd like to get it done tonight if possible.

I should be on by then, or shortly thereafter.

Anyone else want to join in and fill out the fire team?

I'm in the same boat, except I'm a Hunter which sucks.  Managed to get a vod shotgun though, doing pretty decent with it, but that fusion rifle sucks for me.

Got it!  Got to 315 in just couple of hours using a shotgun in Rumble.  :-)  I should have this done by the end of the night (hopefully)

Xyor is a pain in the butt!  I had help doing this, and we actually got him to spawn 3 times before we finally killed him - he's easy to kill, it's just the crapload of adds he brings with him that killed us.

If anybody needs help, I'll jump in.  GT: DV thello

Was working on this last night and the one when you need a 25 K/D spree. I got it up to about 300 in a few hours using nothign but Athelon's gun and the sniper from the raid. So annoying. The 25 k/d is so misleading. Not sure how they do it, I think it addss up your matches to make them equal 25. If you have a bad game it will take some away. But one game I still went up in points, so I'm not sure.

I believe you will get points for kills and assists, but lose a point for each death.

We tried the Xyor strike the other night and got overwhelmed with all Wizards and Knights, we were using the strategy where you stay in the doorway and pick enemies off as they come through. Evidently that it the exact opposite of what you're supposed to do. I found this vid that explains some of the spawns and what you should and shouldn't do.

I'd be down to run this tonight (or any night this week) if anyone wants to help out.
