Destiny DLC content revealed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-osssAKgEc One new raid in the reef, I think it was 3 or 4 new strikes and a couple story missions here and there. No idea about weapons or armor. It looks like all this content is already on the disc, but to help stretch the longevity of the game they'll let us pay them more money to unlock it later.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with DLC on the disc, not necesarily, at least.  If this DLC has a lot more exposition and story stuff, I wonder how that'll strike folks.

The disc probably just contains the rudimentary groundwork for the DLC; this is Bungie, not Capcom.

It's just a shitty business practice. They have 100% of a product, block off 10-15% then charge 100% of the price then additional money for that 10%. But hey, if paying extra makes you happy then more power to ya.

I dont like it, but it isnt a shitty business practice.  Its good business practice.

The market will support a game of X hours for Y price (depending on genre).

So, for simplified examples, $60 bucks, the market says:

Shooter: 8ish hours (plus multiplayer). e.g. Halo  (Titanfall got one over here because it had no single player campaign).

Shooter/RPG hybrid (multiplayer is optional): 15-20ish hours (like Borderlands or Mass Effect or Dragon Age).

RPG: 15-20ish hour main story + 20+ hours optional quests (zero multiplayer required) (like Fallouts or Skyrim).

For anything beyond that, a business would be foolish not to charge for DLC content.  Not doing so would be bad business practice (again - not that I have any love for it - but its smart).

Destiny fits somewhere between the Shooter/RPG hybrid and RPG catagory.  Has elements of both.  Borderlands like length but with beefier multiplayer options.  Its why I think it has given fantastic value so far.  Now, how much you enjoy the extra things is subjective of course, but I think the above is a simple estimate of the market.  Seems like good value to me.  I still look forward to logging on every night.

I think one of the reasons Destiny is so polarizing is that it doesnt fit neatly into one of the above catagories, and people are assigning it expectations of one of those catagories.  This is both its strength and weakness.  It is a genre bender.  It will either succeed and make a new genre paradigm (where all new games will be expected to have the same type of features) or it will flop and the genre will stay as one of the tried and true formulas above - no innovation necessary.  Personally, I think it is going to succeed and make a new paradigm.  As simple evidence, there are a number of people in this forum that blatantly "hate" the game and yet I see them on and playing every day (and I would bet money will buy the DLC when it comes out).  Bungie has done something right.

Just my opinion.

Let me rephrase. It's not a bad idea for them to do it. Obviously making more money is good. I meant it's a dick move. They're not adding additional content, the content is there. They're simply making you pay more for it. Plain and simple: If content is finished in time for certification and ships with the master gold print for manufacturing, there's no reason why it couldn't be included with the game from the start. It's obvious it's a cash grab and nothing more.

Like you said, Destiny will probably succeed and make a whole new paradigm. What happens when Bethesda sees how well it works for Destiny and decides in the next TES game that the thieves guild or dark brotherhood are worth an extra $4.99 each? I'm sure as you read that you're just thinking I'm an ass and that would never happen. But we both know if it did everyone would say it's worth it and pay the extra money to unlock the guilds.

The bottom line is, you paid for 100%, they're giving you 80% and making you pay extra for the rest. You might enjoy that 80%. It could be the best thing in the world, doesn't change the fact that it's 80%. Which encourages them to try for 70% next time. But hey, nevermind me. I'm just an asshole, no idea what I'm talking about. Games like Street Fighter x Tekken with $110 of on disc dlc never existed.

+1 Ive always hated buying DLC thats already on the disc, just seems like a slap to the consumers face. But on the other hand this isnt a new practice, weve all dealt with it in our various games. We are talking about the juggernaught that is M$ and their only concern is their bottom line, same as the developers. You just have to ask yourself, how much do I enjoy this game? If the answer is positive then it's money well spent. I can however understand a persons dislike of paying extra money for something that is intergrated into the media that they have paid for once already! Maybe well get some good free stuff to smooth the feathers.

I wish they would just charge more for a game then charge for DLC.

It probably wouldn't stop the conspiracy theorists and it would scare away penny pinching consumers (I'm not paying $89 for a standard version of a game).

I see nothing wrong with putting it on disc to be unlocked later.  Why not?  Saves tons of internet bandwidth if it doesn't have to be entirely downloaded.  Faster install with less download.  The market supported the $60.00 price for the version released.  Smart business. Why give away $100 worth of the game  for $60.  They could have got a lot more then $60 for the release version.  Does MS cap prices?  I think raids should have been a pay for add on.  Irks me that I'll never get to play that part of the game much, let alone finish it without any matchmaking.   If  there were raid matchmaking I'd be playing it quite a bit since it is far more exciting then the rest of the game.  But whatever.  I will most likely have been able to play most of  the game for a few weeks, for only $25.

How do we even know this is going to be a paid for expansion?? We don't. So how about not jumping to conclusions. There have been some rumors that there is going to be some free DLC before the first major paid one get's released.

Watching the video, some of the locked points say House of Wolves or Dark Below. Those are the first two DLC that you will have to pay for. But there appeared to be plenty that didn't.

So when buying a car they should just give you all the bells and whistles because they already made them?  Computers?  What about preloaded software?  It's already on disc so why do I have to pay to add it?  Processor cores.  They're already on chip so why do I have to pay to unlock more of them? Just makes no sense all the way around including future pay for content being on release disc or in a digital download.  For the hours of entertainment we can get from a $60 game we should count our blessings they are only $60.   Bungie says I have 4d4h of play time under my belt.  That's $0.60 per each hour of entertainment so far.

Some, not all of the data are on disk according to Bungie (queue Bungie is a liar pants).

Don't equate a game to a car.

We each value products by our own rules. I am certain I already have more than my moneys worth from the game. I'll probably pay for the DLC because it's more than I what expected to get for $70 in the initial release.

Your arguments may work for you but many others don't see it that way.
