Warlock: Sunsinger subclass

Any Warlocks here that have had much luck with the Sunsinger subclass? I've tried putting some time into it, but in all honesty I just don't get how it's supposed to work.

I initially thought it would be a good support class, but activating the super just feels so "blah" when compared to the Nova Bomb. Also, when compared to the other subclasses of the Titan and Hunter, it just seems like something is missing. Yeah, I can spam my grenades and melees and also get a defense buff, but that's all I've really noticed at the moment.

Perhaps I just haven't grasped the build, so I'm hoping sombody here has experienced it enough to give me some tips how to play it properly.

Hello! Level 28 Sunsinger lock here and I can tell you I absolutely love that subclass. I love it so much I get depressed thinking that one day I'll actually need to roll a new character. The subclass itself I believe is intended to be a support role but I found that it can melt faces and save the whole fireteam in multiple ways. I have done both of the weekly nightfall strikes so far and this week I saved us from wipes twice with the self revive. Most of the time if I'm farming I'll roll with the defense buff, but if we need more damage for a boss I'll switch to the cool down reduction buff for the whole team. I agree that the activation is a little lack luster but I find it a lot better than the golden gun activation lol, sometimes if you jump in the air when you activate it can look better. Also, in the small amount of crucible I've played I've found that the buff that let's you hover when you aim down the the sights throws people off a lot. In my opinion it's one of if not the best subclasses in the game. It offers so much survivability and damage when built it's unreal. In the beginning of it though it's a little difficult to get in to if your defense is low because that cuts back on your orb generation. Get armor. Go sunsinger. Melt faces. Save fireteams from wipes.

I think my subclass is broken. Nothing works, not even the jump.

You need to spend some time killing/doing stuff with the new subclass before the basic abilities (like boost jumping and supers) become available.

Yeah, I (eventually) figured it out

I did a lot of cursing when I started Sunsinger.  No grenades and no glide.  Good time to go an Patrol missions.  I don't have much of the skill tree built but Fireborn(revive after death) sounds promising for strikes and raids.  Sure seems like it leans torwards a support class

I'm still relativly new to the subclass, lvl 20, but being able to nearly spam grenades with the super activated is a blast.

I didn't know they recharged faster during super..  I'll have to try it

They recharge A LOT faster. And along with that perk that gives you a 2nd one as well? You're a walking grenade launcher.

Sweet, more reason for me to keep leveling the subclass.

I'm working on Sunsinger again now that I've finished Voidwalker. However, the biggest drawback will be not having Blink in Sunsinger. Now that I've been playing with Blink, it's so much easier to get out of bad situations - and it's really good in the Cruicible.

Working on a voidwalker now.  I like this class the best so far.  Once you change to sunsinger can you got back to voidwalker?  Or you are stuck if you dont like it?

You can easily switch back and forth between subclasses - just like switching weapons. Also, just like different weapons, you have to level each subclass up separately - meaning everything has to be unlocked again when you start a new subclass.

Yeah, you can flip back and forth.

I have a Warlock at about lvl 24 now. I really didn't like it during the early lvls because he was so weak and died so easily - compared to the Titan. Once you get him above about 16 or so, his abilities become pretty fun. I'm running Voidwalker because most of the strikes I run are with randoms. The more medic-oriented Sunslinger is wasted unless you have a team that's communicating. Used right, the Sunslinger is awesome as part of a cooperative/talking team.

I bought a magazine while in the grocery store a week or so ago. It was published by Newsweek, but it was all glossy Destiny - every page except one. In it was a section that listed several Bungie employees and what characters, subclasses and weapons they prefer. One that represents a pattern.....

Bungie employee Kevin Yanes:

Warlock:

Primary Weapon: Exotic Red Death Pulse rifle with Suros Regime Auto rifle backup.

Secondary Weapon: Black Chasma ESC Shotgun

Heavy Weapon: Exotic Gjallarhorn Rocket w/Wolfpack rounds for PvP

Specialty: Radiance & Firebolt Grenade.

Can someone confirm that Radiance does not buff your weapon damage?

I don't think it does, but I have read conflicting information online.

You are correct. Radiance does not buff your weapon damage.

Radiance speeds up grenade cooldowns and can give a defensive buff if you equip that attribute.  Doesn't increase weapon damage, but the grenade spamming is great for bosses.  Still working on getting that second grenade for even more mayhem.  There is also the perk to self regen if you die with Radiance charged.

I am a level 27 (almost 28) Warlock and I have both subclasses leveled up fully.  I tend to use the Solar grenade on the build because with my guantlets I get a boost to duration of my grenade.  I also use gift of the sun with it and you can snag a lot of kills by sticking those fgrenades near the doors when the enemy is about to come through them.  It's great in PvP for the same reason, it creates area denial.

Radiance depends on what I'm doing.  If I'm in a group with comms or if I can tell they are playing smart I set Radiance to provide cooldown benefits.  Everybody's super and grenades are back in an instant.  If I'm alone I set it to Radiant skin to tank in PVE, in PvP I set it to boost cooldown and most PvPers know to come around for a super and grenade charge when I activate it.  You can swap skills on the fly (you do reset the cooldown so prepare) So i might be set to Radiant Skin through some of a strike but then I set Fireborn in a last level.  You don't know how useful it can be.

My melee is usually on Flame Sheild by myself in PvE or Brimstone in a group....those orbs help people alot sometimes.  In PvP it is set to Brimstone.

My attributes are almost always set to battle recovery and toughness and raw speed.  This guy is slow!

Gift of the Sun (extra grenade) is always on.  And so is the buff to Radiance to last longer.

It is not as fancy or direct as Nova Bomb but when there is a boss and you stick him with 5 grenades in a row from Radiance alone, that cause over 700 points of damage each you will dig it then!  I hope this helps

Great post!

Now that I've fully upgraded Sunsinger, I can certainly see the benefits. I still prefer to run it mostly in PvE, but using the sticky Fusion nades to get kills in PvP is fun. Plus stacking Gift of the Sun and having two nades is awesome.

I only wish it had Blink like the Voidwalker subclass.

I tend to switch back and forth depending on the make-up of my group and if there are damage modifiers like Solar or Void.

Sunsinger certainly offers a fair amount of diversity in how you make a build.

I have the Voidwalker almost done, just a few last items. I have Sunsigner leveled up pretty far, just shy of fireborn.

I enjoy playing as sunsigner more as the grenades are awesome.  The super is okay and it can help the team when you are spamming grenades. I like the fusion grenades as they do awesome damage. Flame shield has saved me many times as you are low on health and then melee to gain shield back right a way.  We were doing Vault of Glass lastnight and I can see where fireborn would have been really helpful.  I know glitch was running it and it saved a couple tries multiple times.

I do run Voidwalker when I run solo sometimes.  The nova bomb is great when you need to put out high dps quickly.  The grenades are okay.  Blink is cool but I prefer the focused burst as you can go farther.  This way I can jump from ledger to ledger quickly.  Life steal can be helpful when need to restore some health.
