Where do I post to discuss a particular topic?

And not have the topic co-opted by someone who wants to derail the discussion?

And not be told that I'm somehow out of order for pointing out a reply is off topic to another member?

And where do I find the membership status hiearchy page so that I can know my place and not say anything that could possibly be construed as being contrary to any member of more priviledged status?

Why are you crying about that other thread for? All I said was that we should be able to post whatever we wanted to and that I thought your post was funny. Boo hoo.

Jones, look at the topic. It took <5 replies for the discussion about a new track to turn into a completely off topic hate fest. Zombie has a right to his opinion, I welcome it. If he feels the need to express it he should have started a new topic. Look at what we ended up with, a whole flurry of crap that no longer resembles the original subject.

You're an intelligent guy Jones. I'd love to hear your suggestions on how we can foster open and thoughtful dialogue about all topics, and permit those topics to continue to be discussed.

If any topic that's disagreed with can be coopted to the point that the original message is completely lost, then it basically amounts to fascism.

Fascism is a type of government that censors its citizens and oppresses opposition. What happens here is closer to chaos, although I can honestly say that I do see hints of censorship and oppression in the moderation style applied to some of the forums. I can see your point about maintaining the integrity and spirit of the thread by every post staying on topic. However, experience has taught me that these types of threads have a half-life of sorts, and start to decay very quickly without accomplishing much. I believe that conflict and differences of opinion generate interest and can widen the appeal of a thread, but only in moderation...else we have chaos. Let's take the Road America thread, for example. It started innoccuously enough as a general "I like the new Forza 5 track" type of post. I read it this morning but declined to participate because I didn't find it very interesting, no offense to Max. However, I checked back later and found the thread to be very interesting. Zombie had dropped this bomb of irascible awesomeness out of left field which,in turn, generated some opposition. The thread was suddenly much more appealing to me so I continued to read until I found the two words that compelled me to participate...those two words were "vitriolic troller." I believe that conflict is almost vital to thread life, but once the thread devolves into name calling it has probably reached the end of its usefulness.

We are all involved in an activity that promotes competition, on a site that promotes camraderie and fellowship. We are all friends and rivals at the same time, and we're all just humans. Some folks are going to have bad days, some are actively looking for a fight, and we're always going to have trolls. We are all equal, and have no authority over the other guy. The only influence that you can exert over another person is in your words, which are incredibly powerful, and your personal commitment to the subject. Being a creative type of person, I can visualize a set of forum guidelines being created, partially adhered to, and ultimately abandoned. We have only one simple rule here: don't be a dick. It's as simple and effective as any rule or set of guidelines can be. Say your piece, own your words, and be accountable. I think that's both attainable and implementable, and about as close to balance as we can expect to get.

To be honest nearly every thread that is posted here has managed to be dragged off topic at some point, even so there can be some meaningful discussion.  Personally I've found that after getting a verbal slapping in some threads I take a breath and roll with the punches. There is nothing wrong with a little heated discussion every now and then as long as it doesn't degenerate to childish name calling.

To conclude I would say that as long as you get your point across it's all good.

Hmm, I never look at how long someone's been here. Maybe that's my charm out in the open forums...I have irritated a few old timers, not for lack of respect for tenure so much as disdain for that being said.

Fitzy's quite good at getting as good as he gives.

As for the " I don't like it" crapfest, it's really outlived it's ability to interest me and I side step it like a steaming pile of dogshit anymore.

Who can't turn a phrase? cheeky

If someone says something in a thread you're involved in, you can attack it like a mad dog, or step around it and keep walking. Simple really.

I'm not MAD about anything, that would be ridiculous. I just think it's funny when people try to tell you that cant voice your opinion. I also dont care about tenure within the Clan, yeah I was here when it started so what. I told JCotter years ago that I had no interest in being a moderator in these forums I'm just here to have fun with the folks I raced with for years and get to know some of the new folks as well. As far as throwing jabs, some of us HAVE been around a long time and we are no stranger to calling each other names etc. which is why I threw that at Fitzy. He's a great guy that I dont get to hear from as much as I used to since he doesnt have a PS3 or XBone. Seems some take more offense about things that weren't directed at them then those it was aimed at. We are adults perfeclly capable of speaking up for ourselves. All in all we should stop going down this line of thought in our posting because it's just going to wind up as a big pile of shit that everyone will step in. Yeah I guess I started the whole thing by saying T10 is treating us like dumb consumers. If I offended your love for a game then I'm SORRY,with me I could care less what you say about a game you dislike that I may enjoy...you have a right to your opinion. You wont hear anymore from me about this whole subject, its dead and buried. I somehow suspect Jonsey will feel the need to express himself again though...

It's a rare occasion that I find myself short on words, sure enough. I don't really have anything else to add but if someone wanted to argue for a while I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it. ;)
