Fanatec - the final word - sort of....

http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/thread/6268354.aspx

Errr, so call me cynical, but I think this might actually be a "we have worked out that we'll get more out of you through a new wheel than any fiddly add-on. Please buy a new wheel from us, loyal Fanatec user, at some unspecified and vague point in the future. Pretty please, love Thomas"

And I probably will, but its clearly going to be a while until that happens.

I think I am gonig to be saving up for the TM wheel this time around.  The idea of swapping out the wheel rim for an F1 wheel, and that it is PC compatible really sold it for me.   I know some people are complaining about the pedals but for me I am not coordinated enough for using the clutch and doing the heel-toe.

For now I have my CSR that I will keep using for the 360/PC.

i will only jump for one in the future if its cross compatible with the ps4 and the pc, i think its to much money say 250 300 for just one system

Mind you, if fanatec offer let's say a CSR type entry product, they will undercut both mc and tm. Can we see that happening?

If it was £249 or so and worked with my csp's I think I might bite the bullet and keep the elite for PC/ps.

If they offered an elite/csw level product that was truly cross platform I'd sell the elite and move to that.

On the one hand, I like the idea of being able to use my Clubsport pedals and rims (BMW and Formula) with the Xbox One, in addition to PC and PS3/PS4.  On the other hand, I just got the Clubsport set up in May and am not looking forward to buying yet another base, which will almost surely cost as much as, if not more than the $450 I dropped in May on the Clubsport wheel base.  If I got this route, it likely means I will have to sell my T500 wheel and pedals.  sad

Here is a new post from Fanatec's Facebook page:

Why is it so difficult to make your current Xbox 360 wheels compatible to the new console?

Several people have raised their concerns and we understand your disappointment but we also hope you see that there is nothing Fanatec could have done to make your wheels compatible to the new console. Technically it is probably possible to make an adapter but any device connecting to the Xbox 360 or Xbox One (incl. this adapter) needs to have a security chip module which can only be purchased from MS. So without the permission of MS we could only "crack" the security chip and this is not only illegal but would certainly ruin our relationship to MS and other platform owners.
And we were not able to "warn" anybody about this as up to this moment it is still possible that MS changes its mind like they did on other specs of the XB1 as well. It still can happen but we want to be fair and tell you that it is not likely to happen.
We never claimed that the wheels were compatible to Xbox one and please remember that all peripherals of the first Xbox did not work on Xbox 360 either.
But even if we were able to make such an adapter, the development costs would be significant as the XB1 uses a different force feedback protocol and in our wheels the Xbox protocols and PC protocols are separated and use different communication (wireless vs. USB). Given the limited market for such a device, such an adapter would be quite expensive.
Microsoft has good reasons to skip the backwards compatibility as this allowed to implement a completely new and more powerful communication protocol. Of course they are happy to sell new controllers to you and earn money on licenses but keep in mind that a console is about plug and play. MS is very strong to provide a clear standard for controllers and make sure that all controllers work with all games of a certain genre. On other consoles it can happen that your brand new and official controller works only with one game because the communication protocols are not clearly defined from the beginning.

The only thing we can offer is to develop a wheel where you can at least use your peripherals so you don’t have to buy a complete new setup. And when this wheel is ready, we will make an attractive upgrade offer for all existing customers for sure.

This was a pretty long post with a lot of inside information but I hope you can understand the situation a bit better now.
I really appreciate your support and patience.

Best regards
Thomas

Well, as expected really. Glad its out in the open but it could have been done much earlier.

The upgrade option is slightly encouraging.

I also read that as you'll be able to use your pedals/shifters?

Yes, this is the Facebook post from Fanatec about that:

XBox 360 Wheels on XBox One
So far there is no adapter solution to make an Xbox360 wheels compatible with Xbox One and it is unsure if this will be possible.
But there is a high chance that you can use your pedals, rims and shifters with a potential new Fanatec wheel for Xbox One although we cannot confirm a launch date yet. This will save you a lot of money and you can keep using the equipment you prefer.

I had read something earlier, either facebook or fm.net that they were looking at making a new base for the X1 that would allow people to use their current pedals and shifters.

After the news of the TM wheel being PC compatible I think I'm going to be saving for it.   I have a CSR with pedals that I have been using but the thought of the TM with the F1 rim is just too tempting.  I kind of have to laugh though when I see people posting that they aren't going to buy any wheel unless it works on all three systems, X1, PC, and PS4.  Good luck 1

Now to conform to the post that I have read across several websites I shall blast MS for the simple fact that they are a big compay:

*clears throat*

OMFG!!!! M$ you F*#cked me so hard, I bought my CSR two years ago and your telling me it won't be good for 20 more years.  OH MY @#)(% GOD@@@##$$#!!!!!!!!   I know there was never a guarantee in writing that my wheel would be good for the next system or two but how dare you change your S#*T without making the old S*$T work with it.  I expect up to date system specs and cutting edge technology that still also works with devices built around an architecture that was started in 2005!!!!   Thomas you are a GOD even though the FM4 launch was kinda bad, the Elite bases had a high failure rate and took forever to ship I know this isn't your fault.

/sarcasm

Sorry, I've had a lot of Dr. Pepper today and didn't get much sleep last night so anyways.

Sounds like the best of a bad situation to me, but I don't own any of the equipment, just an observation. I really doubt that an existing wheel would be viable moving forward, and from what I hear many of you are more attached to the pedals than the wheel. I would look at selling off unused equipment towards the new before there's a glut and the price bottoms out though.

What I will likely do is sell my T500 wheel and pedal set, which continues to have strong resale value, and buy the new wheel base that Fanatec is doing, if it has Xbox One, PC and PS3/PS4 compatibility.  I will keep my existing CSW wheel base as back up.
