i dunno about jumping the shark, just yet. They crammed a lot of storyline into one epi. I'll say that it'll jump the shark if he "wakes up" at the end of the season. I'm also wondering how long they have signed for, cause it seems as if they are looking for an end game now. Still, it was a good epi. Probably be the best season since trinity, which i thought was great, but Lithgow made it pretty awesome.

They have already announced before this season started that they are doing two more seasons, so it is leading up to the end. If this first episode is any indication, it will be really interesting from here until the end.
I haven't watched since the Trinity season. Heard the last couple were a bit off. Should I pick up from this new season or should I back track and watch the last two I missed?

You don't have to, but I'd back up to last season. This one is a direct continuation of it from the opening scene.
It has been an interesting season that we see how Dexter's code really was created. I just feel like this season is missing something, especially since he has actually only stalked and killed one target so far this season. I know he has killed two other people but one was not even a target and the other was not much of a stalk.
Nevertheless, the story is definitely coming together and you can see the end coming and it will probably be something shocking like last season or like season 4 ended.
Cardiac, in response to your spoiler. I think they cover a little bit of that in this Q&A with the producers. Interesting read, and brings a little bit of light to the final few episodes.
I don't know, I think I just saw Fonzie jump over that shark again. We'll see how this shakes out.

There was some confusion amongst the cast in different comments if this season is the last, or if there's another one after this.
I was pleased with how this episode took off from ast season, and from the previews I've seen so far, it looks promising.

I don't know how I felt about this season, especially last nights finale.
I know how I feel. This season SUCKED. Seriously, Dexter might as well been wearing a fonzi jacket jumping a shark. Just lame.
After falling a couple seasons behind a finally got caught up on Dexter and still love it. Good season so far.....
Without spoiling it I still can't get over what his sister did when they were in the car recently, that was crazy.

Well that was quite an ending! Definitely one of the most intense series finales I have ever seen.
Really? I'm glad it's over. I wasn't a fan of this season at all.
