Doesn't matter anymore.  CoD is more fun than halo.  I said it.  I enjoyed the times had, but the train left the station when the first black ops came out.

They're certainly supporting Blops 2 a lot better than 343 is supporting Halo.

That's not true. H4 was a mess and it's getting much better. Blops2 was pretty much the same game as Blops.

My friends' list says otherwise.

Used to be able to find multiple people to party up with.  Now I am lucky if there is one person even playing Halo.

If Halo 4 launched as the game it is now, maybe people would've actually stuck around.  They've made the mistake twice now of releasing a game that sucked at launch, lost momentum, and ended up where it is now.  There's too much money in gaming for them to make it again and the global championship is an indicator that they'll be smart about it next time around.

They were actively courting the competitive community just before release, too.  I'd like to think that Bravo is influencing them positively, and bringing in the other folks and giving them a voice (Walshy, Ghost, etc.) can only improve it.

Halo will still be Halo. It's a whole different Universe, story, theme, style and whatever. It does not have to be a professional competitive shooter to continue succeeding in that endevour. Halo 4 has been a critical success story, in it's own way. Critically suffering in some ways too. It is a money maker. Yes, Halo really should stay in the multiplayer matchmaking scene because that is just one other way to keep hawking add-on products.

Expect the next Halo to perhaps go the way of Destiny but with a Spartan Ops theme. Multiplayer may come in many styles but with so many new shooters coming to the Next-gen boxes, Halo will have to evolve again to find it own niche.

It's kind of single minded to think Halo has to compete for #1 Competitive shooter when the developer has little control over whether that happens or not. Bungie didn't plan for what happened with Halo CE and certainly didn't plan well for Halo 2's success. It just happened because those games fit the circumstances of the time period.

The future for Halo may simply be for a community of people who like playing in the Halo Universe doing Halo stuff. If it wasn't for that Universe, I'd probably be playing COD. As it is, I'll be trying out TITANFALL, DESTINY and probably COD on XB1 before getting to the next Halo. 343i knows this will happen to millions of its player base and surely must be planning for it.

I think that it has more to do with the Halo 2/3/Reach lobby system vs Halo 4 and beyond.

Bungie had matchmaking/lobbies down to a T.  They knew how to make it work.

Now take 343i.  You CANNOT see game time limits unless you join a party.  A lot of times, you can't join a party for some unknown reason.Lack of end user support re: game issues.  They changed the main characteristics of "halo" from beyond what it used to be (very very limited power weapon timers, thus eliminating map control)

Call of Duty is successful because you pick your loadout/power weapon.  You can't be rocking a "dmr" and then call in an inceneration cannon (for the most part).  The CORE gameplay mechanic of CoD is that everyone can have the same weapons, not some lucky stroke (aside from care packages...which are somewhat random...but they don't give you anything that isn't "detectable" to other players).

343i really has a lot of uphill work to do. I am as die hard a halo player as anyone that I know of.  I am highly doubting that Halo 5 will be any better.  Halo Reach was decent, as you still needed to control a map and know where stuff was.  You couldn't call in rockets, you had to fight for them.  I REALLY hope they move back to this mechanic, but again they are catering to the call of duty mindset...so I'm afraid those mechanics are gone forever.

My number one biggest problem is the low population. Community is a huge part of Halo or any other game for that matter and CoD has a much bigger community. Halo is getting harder and harder to find friends to play with.

I agree with you T. Like I have said community is a huge part of this game. Bad lobbies, F'ed forge/fileshare, connection issuses, when you have a big party you sit in the lobby forgever and watch your friends or yourself get dropped. After awhile you are just like forget it I'm getting off. Now if you play alone you got into game pretty good, but 3-4 months into the game you hit your 130 and there was almost no incentive to continue to play the game.

I do think Halo 5 will be a very good game, but it won't be the game old school players want.

343 will really have to show me something to get me excited for Halo 5.

My interest started to decline with Reach. Halo 4 was announced and many things about it excited me and I was curious about 343. Now I've seen their vision of Halo and I'm not really on board. I will say Halo 4 IS better than when the game launched, they are making steps to improve the game. Since bringing in Quinn and Bravo, matchmaking has improved.

I wholeheartedly agree that the lobby is horrible. Bungie's lobbies were always spectacular and then we get saddled with this current system - ugh, I don't know what 343 was thinking.

I honestly do not know what 343 will do with Halo. I thought H4 would be the game to invigorate the community again. Now it seems we are even worse off. I mean, I want to play H4, but I just find myself feeling "meh" about it and loading up something else to play. However, sometimes it's good to take a break from a game, play something else, and then come back ready to play.

It'd be tough to attribute halo's decline to the newer games sucking or COD just being more fun.  But I like the H4 mechanics now aside from sprint.  H3's online population was monstrous and I'd think some of those players would give H5 a chance if it got off to a strong start.

My biggest gripes for Reach and H4 at launch and suggestions for improving H5 are the launch maps.  I would have looked past DMR bloom, sprint, etc in Reach if there was something fun to play on.  Reach had Countdown (launch map?) and that was about it.  H4 had 0 maps at launch that I liked.  The trend in the last 2 Halo's is very few or no good maps at launch, then finally they come out WAAAY too late in the game's life cycle to have an impact.  It doesn't matter how good the game mechanics are...if the maps suck, the multiplayer sucks.

H3 had Pit, Narrows, Construct, Guardian (forget which ones are post-launch) - there were good maps to play on through most of the game's life cycle.

Suggestion for H5 is bring back some tried and true maps that people like or make good launch maps.  Sprint would probably have to go for some of them to work.

I also agree with Ghandi that there should be some kind of ranking system.  That motivated people to play in H3..work on getting their 50's.

Anyways I think Halo has a chance to bounce back a bit if H5 is fun when it launches, not a year later when it's lost all its momentum.

I was just making a point that 343 is supporting the game.

By the time the pros got their hands on Halo4 it was to late. Even the DLC was set in stone. Bravo has made a big positive impact on the game the weapon balancing alone made this game so much better to me.

Nerfing the gauss hog and upping the SAW's effective range are balance?

The Gauss Hog doesn't exist to me, and, yeah, the SAW is a bit of a power weapon anyways.I don't like how the power of the automatics was increased, but it does let things play in the sandbox close-to-fairly.

The Saw is a power weapon and it doesn't bother me. I thinking more along the lines of the loadout weapons. The DMR dominated and now I can use any of the primaries.
