Racing 101. Very HELPFULL topic / I-Racing Driving School Video Series.

The videos below are for iRacing. A PC Racing Simulator.

However, Everything in the videos below is 100% relevant to racing either in real life, Forza or any other racing game. (Well apart from the settings ect)

I really do insist that everyone watches all of them. They range from how to take a turn to drafting and everything in the middle.

As stated above I really do recommend everyone to watch all of them.

Cheers

I thought I'd posted all of them in one playlist, but it looks like only the 1st video plays on my thread. I'm going to replace my thread with yours by moving it over there.

I agree that it should be manditory, but how do you enforce it? It's hard enough just geting folks to come here to the forums let alone post. Since some people even have trouble grasping the concept of sub-forums, I thought maybe it would be best to put this here.

I agree Cotter, more visibility is a good thing, but I don't think you can make anyone do anything around here.

However, that said, most here do have a desire to improve on the track and these are great instructional videos.

Best thing to do is just watch one at a time and think about what it shows.

Do a few races get comfortable with the new info and then watch the next one.

Rinse Repeat

Incredible videos Church!  yes  Thanks for posting.

@Gizzie, you're spot on.  These videos have valuable information for any new driver.  I picked up several tips.

There were two key points that I noted from the videos that would be good to share with everyone:

1) Video 7a Racecraft and Passing - it is the responsibility of the overtaking driver executing the pass to make sure the pass is made cleanly and incident free.

2) Video 7c - Racecraft and Passing etiquette - If both cars are wheel to wheel - the overtaking car owns the corner.  If they are not wheel to wheel, the overtaking driver must yield the corner.

Ciletti is right IMO about yielding for other cars.

I normally go on the wheel rule.

If my front wheels are in front of your front wheels going in to a turn and I'm on the inside, its my line.

If my back wheels are in front of your front wheels and I'm on the outside its my line.

Other than that its the defending drivers line.

It is the reasonability, within reason of the passing car to make the pass clean. Obviously if I'm on your inside and my front wheels are in front of yours and you turn in to me takeing me out I won't be happy lol.

Agreed but lets clarify "going into a turn". Literally going side by side into a turn yours is a good suggestion if not somewhat on the conservative side (half a car is almost enough - WHEN the two guys know each other). But if the guy in front is literally ahead Parcells suggest that "going into a turn" occurs exactly when the front guy starts to brake for the turn ...its a grey area (plenty time they work, more often they do not) but anybody can dive bomb to the inside and park their car right ON (or through) the apex...this is not in the spirit of the interpretation of Church's and Ciletti's wise advise.

Agree with what's folks are saying about racing line ownership, however the challenge most of us have with Forza (certainly I do anyway), is I CANNOT tell EXACTLY where someone is when they are alongside me.  I know folks say you can tell by the distance indicators in the top left etc, but as the corners come up I don't have the skill, or the eyesight, to read that and still be able to get around the corner.

Understand that peripheral vision for us single monitor folks smiley is limited, so the overtaking driver usually has more awareness of where the other car is relative to the apex of the corner.

On occasion I have been able to drive through one or more corners with folks alongside and leaving enough room for both of us to get around cleanly - it does feel real good to achieve that.

My 2c worth is that if the faster guys aren't able to get me at the first corner when they catch up, they usually will by the 2nd or 3rd corner by their ability for faster exit speed - just be patient guys.

One of the things I notice is that passing manoeuvres are often tried at almost all corners of a track in Forza whereas when I watch track racing most passes occur at specific corners of the circuit - know that's a generalisation based on the TV coverage as well but again something to think about.

Lets just have fun racing guys - I know I try to...

Hello,

those vids are great. Saw them many months ago and now. Again I learned something, but as Parcells once said: "The only thing to learn to race save and fast is getting more seat time." Yes, that's right.

My short version of racing etiquette: "Race fair! Race clean! Give space!"

For a newbie as me, it was very challeging to get some speed, but drive clean (no cutting corners, always two wheels on the track). In the last races IMHO "my problem of racing a clean round" was a problem of many drivers. I like to race "hard" and sometimes "exchanging colours" with another car is okay, but kamikaze like overtaking manouvers (rallycross via grass) are not my style. If I will take a place up with such a manouver, I will let the driver past me at the next corner. I think, that is fair. Give me a shout, when this happens.

Racing accidents - as I grow older and get more experience they are fewer than before - will and can happen. Locked brakes, sliding and wiggling car,....... To come back to the track is something I work on. In this stressfull situation (anger about myself, wish to come back fast, handling the car to the right direction, finding the speed again) I had to learn to look (limited view = one monitor) and to anticipate where the other cars are. In the last training races I tried that and promise to take more care for this racing situation.

But sometimes it isn't avoidable. The last example I saw, was in the BTCC with that Audi in Brands Hatch. He had no chance and made a big impact to the barrier, after the car in front of him flew across the track from left to right. I felt sorry for him, because as I understood, he is a privateer with limited money. This scenario I know very well! The first thing he had done, he looked for his bad damaged car and I think he calculated the costs for building up a new one.

For the new guys: Nobody wins a race in the first corner (I really don't know how often I heard or read that phrase - who said it first?) and show patience during a race. There will be chances to overtake safely.

If you overtake me with an inappropriate manouver, I will try to give an answer. May be just like Jason Plato answered Matt Neals overtaking - I think it was in the last 2012 race -. Neal nearly turned Plato and in the next corner Plato took revenge and pushed Neal wide into the grass.

Don't forget - I say this to myself many times -: It is all about FUN!

I found another set that people may find very helpful when it comes to accident avoidance.

There's something about the way the presenter speaks that I find irritating.  Perhaps it's that way too calm tone, but the information is gold so I do suggest viewing these videos.

I hope this helps both the newer racers, and the seasoned pros.

As requested

The information in this 1.5 hour video is a summary of that found in the book "Going Faster".  This book is a race car driver's manual from the Skip Barber Racing School, and is a highly recommended read.
