This site needs a whiskey thread

I'm not sure if there is on already and I just missed it or if whiskey has been neglected and never given a thread.  Sure, Christina Hendricks has great knockers and she looks great holding scotch but, what about the scotch?  Why is the scotch always just a footnote?

So, that being said, I would like to start this thread with what is one of my favorite bourbons.  Elijah Craig small batch aged 12 years.  Where I live (Long Island, NY) the bottle goes for about $24.  While I do love more expensive whiskeys (Makers Mark, Knob Creek), I think that, for the price, this is my absolute favorite bourbon.

"I'm a simple man. All I want is enough sleep for two normal men, enough whiskey for three, and enough women for four.”- Joel Rosenberg

I Like this quote I dislike this quoteToo much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is barely enough.- Mark Twain

I've heard that that Japanese stuff is supposed to be very good.  I've never had rye.  What's it like?  126 proof!?!?!?  No wonder you couldn't feel your face!!

I'm pretty much a noob with it as well.  What I know about whiskey is this:

Bourbon- small batch is king.

Scotch= single malt is better than blended.

Lessons are welcome and would be appreciated 172

basil haydens is my favorite sippin whiskey right now, but it is only 80 proof and expensive ($40 or so per fifth/liter if i remember right). I usually just fill a big (26 oz) glass with ice, pour in a bunch of wild turkey 101 and then fill with diet coke. wild turkey 101 is only $45 for 1.75 liters, more bang for your buck i feel.

Jim Smyth told me about Basil a couple years ago, and I still haven't bought any. I think it's the price tag that throws me off. Tho I'm probably going to go out and get some in the very near future.  My fav is Maker's, I have a couple recipes where I cook with it as well, and everything it touches turns to gold. It's also an excuse for me to the wife that I can go out and get a decent sized bottle and not think twice.

Great Topic!

I love the first comment for this article.  "People are starving and he spends 27000..." blah blah freakin blah.  Hows about this ya hippie *&^&*^, when you have 27K to piss away on whatever you feel like, give it away.

Great thread! My wife got me a bottle of this for Christmas.

According to the crap on their website "it is made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Pot Still whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and a wonderful creamy mouthfeel. "

Cant beat a creamy mouthfeel ;)

The most recent empty bottles in my house are Midnight Moon. The Apple Pie and Cherry are delicious.

 These are gifts.

 I dont drink.

If whiskey tasted good when you barfed it up, I'd probably drink it.

Wouldn't those be better off in a home where they would be appreciated and loved?  Also, that was one of the funniest things i've ever read.

Finally, a thread I can relate to.  Although my usual drink is an 8 oz glass filled with ice cubes, then 3/4 full of Evan Williams black label, then filled with diet coke, I recently got a bottle of Jim Beam Devil's Cut.  A lot of cinamon notes to it, and 90 proof so I can only have about 12 ounces before I start seeing double, but absolutely delicious and $25 per liter.

And by the way, consider the Buffalo Trace label.  The Rare Eagle at $30 per liter is very good, but the Buffalo Trace bottle is pretty good, just a little woody.  I toured the distillery last summer and you could get drunk off the smell in the warehouses.

I really liked the devil's cut.  Very smooth considering how strong it is.  I've had Buffalo Trace, good stuff.  I want to try to find a bottle of rare eagle.  It was voted to be the best bourbon of 2012.

Lastly, might I recommend ginger ale instead of coke.  I've found that coke is a bit too sweet.  The ginger ale is nice cause it keeps the flavor of the whiskey and doesn't make it too sweet.

It's Evan Williams.  I have to kill the taste a little bit.  That's funny you can't find the Rare Eagle.  State controlled stores in Alabama all carry that but none of the have Buffalo Trace.  I'm trying to talk my brothers-in-law into splitting a barrel of Rare Eagle with me.  You can pick out a barrel at the distillery and they will bottle it for you and ship it to a liquor store of your choice that you've already made arrangements with.  Comes out to about $13 per bottle.

So, let me ask all of you this... What is the standard way you drink? I see many of you mix with coke or ginger. I typically drink it on the rocks. The first sips got that bite, but after a few mins it mellows out. I used to drink it with coke, but found that took too much away from the actual whiskey itself. I guess if you do get some of the cheaper stuff like standard jack I can see needing the coke. Just curious to what everyone's preference is and why.

I have no standard really Bigfish. It depends on the drink. BV or Crown demands Ginger. While SoCo needs either cranberry or soda. Fine whisky usually stands alone.

I got a decent story...

I went to the liquor store up the street last night. I saw a big display for Captian Morgan Taboo. I asked the girl how was it. She said she did not know. I asked how the Captian Morgan Black was and she didn't know. So I walked over to the Whiskey and looked. She came over and asked if she could help me find some thing. I asked her if they had any American rye whiskey. Of course they did not have any. I asked her if they had any Lucid. Of course I had to tell her that it was Absinthe and of course there was none to be found. So I grabed two jars of shine and headed to the counter. She commented on how she liked the blackberry with sprite. I told her to try the cherry with coke but she said that did not sound to good.

At this point I was getting agitated. Is she pushing me out the door? What is the problem here? This dumb bitch couldnt give food to someone starving.

So, I look down through the glass so I don't have to look at her and I see 2 boxed bottles of Johnny Walker Blue. For shits and giggles I ask the girl how much the bottle was. She started to look in the computer and then she said $65.

God bless the angel...

I told her I would take both bottles in addition to the shine. She fumbled a bit to get them out of the case. When she scaned them in however the price changed to $249.00. I told her to never mind.

Heres my two cents on the mixer debate.

I always drink whiskey with just ice but last weekend I decided to try ginger ale. I didnt like it at all. For me it took away far too much flavour. Maybe I put in too much ginger, I probably went one third whiskey and two thirds ginger.

My Dad and most of the older folks I know always drank whiskey with a little jug of room temperature water, periodically topping up the whiskey to suit their taste. Ice was an absolute no-no.  Its something I havent tried.

Yes, and in the USA there were "dry" states and some states had no liquor sales on Sunday. So, if you went to a dance, your whiskey was in the trunk of your car. In the fifities, few had ice/coolers and so any drink was at ambient temps. People crammed into cars and contributed a dime for gasoline to get to wherever the dance was held. Most didn't drink to get drunk, only to enjoy and as a social occasion. Some of the finer things in life are best savored slowly and conscientiously. Hope it is not a lost art.

As an aside I was talking to a buddy of mine who works as a kind of project management consultant. Hes done a lot of work for some of the major distillers and has seen how their marketing works. According to him, there is no point paying more than about $50-70 dollars for a bottle of whiskey. Anything above this is just a ploy to make people think they are getting something better. The distillers know this and that people are willing to pay bigs bucks just to tell their friends and show off.

He says the thousand dollar bottles are a complete joke and the distillers come up with crazy reasons to sell them at this price which are all made up. The type of person who can afford this doesn't care either way.

Anyway this is what he tells me.

So whisky thats been aging in a Spanish sherry barrel since 1964 is no better than 12 year old?

It seems too good to be true.

 Although I'll never know.

A thread I can get behind!  I am a bourbon drinker, born and raised in KY!  Liqour Barns here sell there own brand of bourbon called Hancock Reserve and it's mighty tasty, don't know if its sold outside of the state though, nice and a hint of an oak after taste.  Four Roses makes a great bourbon, and pretty cheap too.  The small batch goes for 24$ and the single barrell for 29 or so, the small batch though is where it's at.   Town branch is a new bourbon made in Lexington KY (home town) that is pretty smooth and has a nice warmth to it.

All you people mixing your bourbons shame on you!  wink Bourbon is supposed to sipped a room temperature!

Surprising fact I learned taking the bourbon trail tour, that most distilleries do not bottle their own bourbon, but ship it out in casks to have it bottled then shipped to retailers.  Wild Turkey is building their own bottling plant now though.

elbe, It's Evan Williams.  It's the only really cheap bourbon that I can stomach and requires mixing to get rid of the paint thinner taste.
