360 Slim: Failing?

I swear there used to be a hardware forum, but I can't find it...

i have a Slim.  The disk has been giving me an unreadable error every time I exit out of a game, but I just eject and it works fine again.  But a few nights ago, the fan is now making a really loud noise, but it runs fine otherwise.  Has anyone had a similar issue?  I'm wondering if it is about to crap out on me, but I've never had one fail before.  Would hate for it to breaknexttuesday...  I might get the H4 box if this one is going to die, but I hate to buy a new console this late in the cycle...

Funny, but I still have a release day 360 that has given me zero problems, and it has been cross country 10 times.  This slim is less than a year old.  Strange.

very odd indeed... there may be a problem with your dvd drive. Those tend to go first on the Slim models. I say take it to a repair shop and have it looked at. Is it still under warranty?

For now, i say install any games onto the HDD so the DVD drive is not being used. That way it could live longer so you can play Halo 4...

Well, you can tell I'm getting old.  Wife tells me it's more than 2 years old, so it's out of warranty...

i install all of my games, but seems the 360 uses the DVD drive randomly.  For instance, it always grinds and freezes every time I exit Waypoint - that shouldn't use the DVD drive at all, but it does. Ah well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed.  If it fails, that will give me an excuse to open it and futz around inside.

Not sure, but I think that the dashboard is reverifying that a DVD is loaded.  Same when you first boot up.  XBOX reads header and validation info of the game DVD.  Good luck.  Have had my slim for about 18 months w/o any problems, knock on wood (ouch that hurts).
