If the police show up at your door and ask questions about you or your child's recent activities, do NOT just answer their questions.  They are not there to be your buddy, they are not there to figure out how things are going.  It is their job to find crimes and stop them - They are trained to asked questions in ways that get you to share more than you have to.  You have legal rights - excercise each and every one of them, or you may be seeing your kid carted off to jail in handuffs ...

I always tell my kids you only answer the questions you are required to answer (largely none), provide your ID if requested, and immediately ask for an attorney. Then you ignore the "but what do you think you have done?" and "you are not being arrested, I just want to talk" BS.

In Virginia, it's your name and address, nothing more.

I don't know jack shit about Colorado, but in Virginia, the most that kid would have gotten was a summons to go to Juvenile court. No mug shot, no finger prints no booking. Also, the whole "ask for a lawyer" thing only kicks in when you are in custodial arrest and a court appointed attorney is assigned to you. The police aren't required to go get an attorney for you.
