Well, we have a lot to celebrate today and so very much to be thankful for. First off, today Megan officially turns 1 year old! I have to admit to you that there were times when Jim and I just weren’t sure if we would get to celebrate this day because of how bad things would get for Megan. I have to actually remind myself that she is a year old. It just doesn’t seem possible, you know? Not only is she tiny but this year has just flown by with everything that has happened. A year ago today, at 7:30 p.m. this sweet, chunky little baby, with a head full of dark curly hair, and a really good tan, came into this world. I never would have thought that this was how her first year was going to turn out. I never thought we would be on such an emotional roller coaster.

I find myself thinking over the past year and remembering all the times we were terrified of what could happen to Megan. I remember the times of her horrific choking and vomiting and thinking she was going to aspirate and die in my arms. That’s a little harsh but it is true. I remember the day, so clearly, when we found out Megan aspirated on everything. They took this sweet little baby, who we thought had nothing wrong with her but a little reflux, and within 5 minutes handed her back to me with a tube running through her nose. That was the beginnings of our very long journey. But you know, we also remember her first smile. How we got so excited when she got her first tooth and when she started crawling. Oh, and the first time she looked at her daddy, waved, said bye-bye and gave him a kiss. My point is, whether it was the scary moments in the hospital, the sleepless nights at home, or the sweetest moments when you forget there was anything wrong at all, our Heavenly Father was there. Does that mean it has been easy? Nope, not at all. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I still wake up some morning terrified to go into her room because I am afraid she has aspirated and suffocated in her sleep. But then those times in the hospital when Megan had so much equipment on her that she couldn’t move and she just sat there, smiling, all you can do is just be so thankful to God. What a blessing to us to be able to be a part of all this.

When I held Megan for the first time a year ago, I had no idea how He was going to move in our lives. How He was going to use our daughter to bring us closer to Him. It was and is not Megan, it is all God! Just because Megan has turned one today doesn’t mean everything is just fine. We still have a lot ahead of us BUT just like the last year, He is still going to be right by our side. There to pick us up when we need it, hold our hands, give us a little nudge when we don’t want to move or are feeling a little stubborn, whatever we need He is there. He gave us a very special birthday present for Megan. Something we had been praying for and we are so excited to share it with you guys. This week Megan went in for her weight check and she weighs, are you ready for this?? She weighs 14 pounds! That was a weight we weren’t sure we would ever be able to see. The formula that Megan is on seems to be working very well. We pray that continues, as you all know the struggles we have had with this. We found out that Megan cannot digest any milk proteins (I think there are 4 or 5 different types) and this new formula helps with that. They also have her on a medicine for her migraines but we won’t know if that is working for a couple of months. There are still a lot of tests pending, mainly the biopsy, which might explain why she has to be fed for 20 hours a day in order to gain weight. But as much as we try to justify all of this, you guys, it is all God! We had a very special prayer time for Megan right before her biopsy during House Of Prayer. She was prayed over and anointed with oil. The next week Megan started gaining weight! God, all God!!! When I found out last Friday that Megan was not able to digest not just one, but all milk proteins, I was like, ok that explains some things but how horrible is that. It will never be as easy as just Megan drinking Lactaid or taking a pill. This is going to be rough. But, get this, Megan has never had anything but formula and as far as she can remember, she doesn’t remember taking anything by mouth. This is actually a blessing. Recently I have just been so anxious to see if we could get her off the feeding tube (knowing that is not going to happen as long as she is aspirating) and I found myself getting a little impatient. But because Megan is on a feeding tube, she is able to take the formula she needs, and gain weight. This formula is really yucky. It would be so hard to get her to take something like that by mouth. Her GI doctor said they give it mainly to G-tube babies. So you see, her tube is just such a blessing! If she did not have this tube, it might be really hard to get her to take something like this by mouth which could cause even more issues. I don’t know if that makes any sense but I pray you guys understand what we are saying.

Bottom line is God is amazing! Thank you all so much for everything! The prayers, the cards, the emails, the meals, the phone calls and just being there. It is all so wonderful and means so much to us. Thank you for continuing on this journey with us and allowing us to share this with you. We are starting another year with Megan and we can’t wait to see what each day brings. You guys are awesome and we love you! God Bless!

END OF LINE
