Shared on Wed, 06/23/2010 - 07:10Went over to my folks Sunday to wish Dad a happy father's day, and a selfish reason. Blueberries are here. He's had about 4 blueberry bushes for almost 25 years now and always makes a lot of berrys. Came home yesterday and found the first watermelon on my porch, a 50 punder. While it's been a dry summer, we're getting just enough rain to make the very best kind of watermelons, wet enough so they will grow, dry enough to make them very sweet. Also picked a bushel of purple hull peas. So supper last night was peas and cornbread, and for dessert watermelon and blueberry muffins. And this morning, blueberry muffins and watermelon for breakfast. Notice I changed the order, pretty slick, huh? It's funny, as a kid the rule was if you don't help pick it, you can't eat it. I hated picking produce so I didn't eat it. As an adult, more than willing to stand outside in 98 degree weather and pick berries for an hour. The only things I still won't pick are okra, squash, and butterbeans. The first 2 I don't eat, the last is one of the most difficult thing to pick in the world. Butterbeans grow best in sandy soil, the plants ony get about 2.5 feet high, and I swear the only time you can pick them is the hottest, brightest day of the year.
Almost forgot, my peaches got ripe today, best ones I've ever had. You city dwellers are missing out.
