An old dear friend called me today and had a strange request.  Seems he has had 2 near death experiences in 4 weeks and truly believes God saved him both times.  He really didn't want to worry his family but felt like he ought to share somehow and wants me to post something on facebook about because, in his words, I'm a good ponderer.

He had just had back surgery and was in post-op when he stopped breathing.  No alarms went off but the nurse for no particular reason came to check on him and sounded the alarm.  Another 15 seconds of not breathing and he would have died.  He said he could see himself in the room while they were working on him and Jesus appeared as an ordinary man and told him his time wasn't up yet.  About 4 weeks later he was at the beach (his wife took him just to get him out of the house) and they heard yelling.  A little girl had gone in the ocean with swells about 4 feet and had gotten in trouble.  The mother had gone in after her and was in trouble as well.  This guy and his wife helped drag the woman to shore and the wife started CPR on the woman.  My friend went back in to get the girl.  He and another guy made it to her but it was too late.  As they start trying to make it back to shore, my friend that still wasn't well from the back surgery knew he wasn't going to make it.  He heard a voice telling him to swim with all his strength, he was going to make it.  He doesn't remember how but he ended up back on the beach.  They took him to the emergency room and he didn't permanently injure his back again.  He believes God saved him again.

Anthropomorphizing?  Possibly.  Does it matter?  No.  I don't care for organized religion, but I've come to the conlusion that true faith can work miracles.  My problem is how to condense this and still get the feeling across?  I'll "ponder" some more.

I know, this is out of character for me.  On a lighter note, I changed my blog picture.  You like?

I sometimes wonder with all the bad shit that happens, but I just try to have faith and think that there has to be a reason for the bad and the good. I have had something so bad happen to me this year Em that was so bad I just about lost it! Without my faith and the belief that justice will be served I would have already sough out revenge and that means I wouldn't be here answering your question now. I still believe that there is a God or a higher spiritual being and I pray that he'll help me and my family through our crisis and gives me strength to carry on and be strong for my daughter. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, or sends us strait to the nut house!:)

no your not. I believe in God, but that doesnt mean you have to. We all make our choices on what to believe or not believe. Why do you ask? Has someone been harassing you? Or do you feel some kind of guilt? ;) hehehe.

I have recently been ordained into the UCTAA (see http://www.apatheticagnostic.com/ , or my blog, for more info). Actually have a positive rating with no comments. I guess I should continue to stay out of the forums.

I believe in God, but don't understand why he hasn't spoken in millenia...In the Old Testament, that boy was all sorts of talkative. Now, A mime would be envious....

Many people dont need/recognize a God figure in their life. Doesnt mean there is anything wrong with that person, they are probably a more complete person than one with a "God" that passes judgement on those without or "the wrong God". Faith is believing in something you cant touch or hold.......but you know its there and right, so you believe in it. Your a good woman Em, go with your heart-you dont need us to tell you whats right for you. You already know, dont stress about it. I dont think Oldmanlo has a "God", shoot him a Pm and see if his viewpoint might clarify any concerns/doubts.

Being a fallen Catholic, I have got to say that, if there is a God, someone will have to prove it to me. It's ok, there are a lot of us, and we are still good people, as you are.

While I don't consider myself a fallen Catholic, I am lapsed and don't practice. But, I do have Faith that there is a God and I try to live my life by the same principles. Do I have incontrovertible proof? No, just faith that there is a higher being and somewhat comforted by that. You don't? No problem!

Sure, I don't believe in God either. I wasn't gonna post this comment because i don't want to add to any dividing lines between people. But this is a mature community and you have so far had positive comments. No matter what decisions we choose as far as I'm concerned its what makes us happy that are the right decisions for us. Believe what you want as long as its the right choice for you.

I admire you for your convictions, I myself do not believe in the "one GOD" that society has deemed socially acceptable for our culture. I think that it is just "society's" way of trying to make us all fit into a box, and anyone not in that box is well damned to hell for all eternity. Fuck them! I don't believe that. Who knows, we could be sitting in some aliens classroom as a fucked up science project! Who knows? I have many theories...

I hope that whatever you believe Em you can find some sort of peace and happiness, because you are such a good person. I know for me, without God I wouldn't have that. I struggle just like everyone else, but am so thankful for my faith in Christ, for that peace and fulfillment it brings. And because of Him I am never alone:)

I am agnostic at best. I am 99.9% sure there is not one, but I have been wrong at least twice. If there is a God, I am not a big fan of Her / Him / Androgynous Creature.

I do not believe in "God". To many scientific fact prove different than what the Bible states. I was raised in church and a preacher's kid. I believe things happen in life, karma. You do bad shit, it will come back to you.

I don't believe in a father figure telling us not to do stuff when it's there to do... I'm rather of the inclination that the supreme being is the universe and we are all a part of the universe, so we are all, in a sense, part of the supreme being. If you do something bad or negetive, instead of going to hell, the universe will adjust itself to right the wrong if it needs to. It's like karma, but it's not. Let's look at a commandment. Would the world be a bad place without religion of some type? I believe it would. There are lots of people that need someone to tell them that if you kill someone, someone you have never seen will hate you and prevent you from being rewarded when you die. Me - I don't kill people because it would make me feel bad and lots of other people, too. I hope that makes sense. I recommend the book "Myth and Religion" by Alan Watts if you choose to pursue this area further.

A very confusing subject. I definately don't believe that someone created a woman out of a man's rib. I havn't seen anyone turned into a pillar of salt. If all of that is metaphor then they should shampoo my crotch. (to quote jack nicholson)
