Gears Holiday Patch News

Gears of War is officially the fastest selling Next-Gen title to date selling 2 million copies worldwide in just 6 weeks with 1 million of those being in the USA. It should be no surprise then to know that Gears is also setting Live records as well. There were more that 1 million unique players playing 10 million games on Live over then same 6 week period and Live Gold subscriptions are up 50%.

Gamers however want more out of Gears. Though it released with 10 maps (2 more than originally announced), they are mostly small so it doesn’t take long to learn them all. Plus there are a number of documented problems with the online play including mics not working when someone new joins an in-progress game lobby, weapon balancing/randomness and a broken ranked lobby system.

Epic has gone on record as saying whenever the DLC comes out, it will be FREE. That has certainly become a rarity in the Xbox Marketplace, but it is typical of how Epic treats it’s loyal fan base.

So when can we expect the free download? Epic has said that we will have ‘something’ during the holidays. They’ve also said that they’ve been working on the DLC for a while now but they are racing against the Microsoft Certification Team’s holiday closure time. So some speculate that we may get a basics patch before Christmas and then something bigger after the holidays. There is currently a Live IM going around from Dom that seems to indicate that we will have whatever the DLC is on Christmas Eve.

The message from Dom reads :

• Beware the locusts. They will come from the ground……stay tuned for alerts!
• Today we stand proud amongst the ruins of Sera, beware chosen one for Raam is watching you
• The time is almost here. We fight in your domain. 24.12.06. Be prepared

I’ll be content with whatever we get. Fixing the game is good but expanding it with more maps and maybe weapons would be even better. Ether way, 2o2p is Geared up for the holiday!
