rFactor
rFactor
Just thought I would add this new thread so I and maybe others don't spam the series thread with comments and questions about the game.
Having just installed it and had a fun day just sorting the graphics out (remembering in the process why I bought an Xbox) I am now coming to grips with the thing. What do I miss so far from Forza? Track map on the head up display mostly. I have a rubbish memory that turns traitor on me mid race, so I do miss that reference tool.
Graphics...not bad but the collision detection is iffy when you collide with stuff and there is some odd pop up that detracts from the overall immersion at times.
What do I like? falling off mountains LOL I was most suprised when missing a corner I found my car flying off a mountain side and landing halfway down. Drive off the track in this and you just keep going.
Replays...way better.
Mods...this is where things get complicated for a new user, what ones are useful? what are the must haves?
So that is what this thread is about, rFactor veterans help out a newb here, good cars? good tracks? best mods? I am starting with the slower ones that come as standard same way I started in Forza, and will be working my way up to hopefully join in the Spazcar series sometime down the line...but are there any other ones 2O4F's are running?
The mods are really based around what series we are running.
Currently we are running the Aussie V8 Supercars, the TC Legends, Spaz has Spazcar and Streetstocks. I will be hosting Enduracers (ALMS) and there is also talk of a GT3 cup down the pipe as well as a Mustang Challenge.
Ditto with the tracks. We pick the tracks based on each mod and some testing is done with the track choices to make sure that the pits work properly, lighting is good, enough stalls for everyone, etc. Bit of work on the back end but makes it worthwhile come race time.
We generally post links to the Mods/Tracks needed (not here but at GBR) and there is a ton of support from everyone if you have questions. Its PC gaming so there are always going to be tips and tricks involved and the best advice I can give is ask first before plunging in. Chances are you can save a ton of time and frustration by finding out the easiest way to do things.
Typically we don't install every mod into the core rFactor, we do installs of the "Lite" version of rFactor for each mod and point the track directories back to the core rFactor install.
PM Hawks and he can point you in the right direction of GBR if that is the way you want to go to get involved.
Cheers!
Thanks KRG, I have met a few of the GBR crew here, and enjoy racing with them so that is the crew I would like to get involved with. Got yer on the mods for series thing that makes sense and I'll not worry my little head about it. I have just remembered Spaz did a thing on installing the Lite version for each mod...I'll take a look at that and also just keep practising 'cause it is very different to Forza.
Hey,
sounds like fun. Two questions:
1) I couldn't find a price and at amazon in Germany this game isn't in stock. How much does it cost?
2) I will have to buy another wheel? I have found a trustmaster for nearly 300.- Euro. That's too much. Do you know a low cost and mid price solution?
JDANKERT
You can direct buy from ISI, but ya it little more spendy if you can't find a disc.
If you have a Fanatec wheel you're good to go, MS wheel doesnt work.
Wired MS Controller, but not wireless
Yes Knight , I have the tutorial vids on my youtube channel

Like DRk said...over at GBR, if you can't find what you need on the forum don't be afraid to ask ;)
Settling in over at GBR, learning curve being followed and slowly getting to grips with what is quite a complex system...Forza is a walk in the park compared to this. The range of cars and tracks is amazing. Need some more Euro folk over there, so if your thinking of getting into PC sim GBR have really got their act together and the site is like a home from home but with added goodies and a lot of rFactor know how.
Well rFactor has had to take a back seat this weekend what with work and Forza commitments, get back to it tomorrow with a vengeance, going to hook up a second graphics card and try to sort out the triple screen thing, bodge up some kind way of getting the race rig involved so I can use the wheel, I am so much better with that now than a controller and I need all the help I can get. Work out the online server thing...much more complicated than Forza. Had some more graphics issues after installing a track map mod that I sorted by editing the config file...PC gaming you got to love it. I kinda missed the detective games you have to play when the damn things fail to work properly. Got it running smooth as silk now and it's not looking too shabby for an old program. Pleased that I more or less got it all sorted by myself being an independent old sod...but think I may need help to sort out the online thing and integrating Team speak for in race communication. So far so good. The physics is very different and the whole race experience with pace cars and flags is very immersive. The AI is streets ahead of forza and I cannot stay with them past the 80% level yet, none of that random braking and crashing into you either. Makes the whole AI thing a viable method of practicing off line and the off line series are a real challenge. Anyway time for bed, will keep updating on progress in the hope of tempting some more Euro guys over, we want a Euro section of GBR :-)
Well the three screen idea is on hold, there is so much to rap your head around with the sim I just don't need the extra hassle. Got Teamtalk installed and working for comms and got on the the GBR practice server for a little online practice. Once I start racing, this useful aid will ensure I wont be running the wrong track or car as it is set up with all the race settings ready to go. Like having a forza lobby online 24/7 that people could just log into, Very cool. Got a monitor bodged onto the rig so used the wheel for the first time...feels completely different...not all in a good way, going to have to work on getting to feel right, the brakes feel horrible and I can't feel what the car is doing. If only I could mix the best of Forza and the best of rFactor life would be perfect.
Just clearing the dust of my game box now.
Its all installed just need to know the server ip and what mods its running.
All the info is on the GBR forum, links passwords etc.

Tempted? Heh, well running some laps with the guys in the wee small hours I got sent another tune and just like here the right tune makes all the difference, suddenly I was lapping in mid pack times. Damn shame is GBR are just about all stateside so races are in the middle of the night.
Keep an eye open for the monthly series. We've got some in the works that will be run before EUSL on Sundays. Currently Touring Car Masters (Group A Touring Cars) is the only series actually off the ground, though the Enduracers (LMS/ALMS) mod is coming soon. June 10th is the next TCM race. But yeah, unfortunately all the mid week series (V8SC, Street Stocks & Spazcar) are going to be too late for you.
I've gotten into rFactor a fair bit myself. So far I've only been involved in a couple of the "Fun Series" races held by Champion Motorsports (http://cmsracing.com). I use my Fanatec 911 Turbo S wheel, Obutto Ozone, a nice quad-core AMD system I custom ordered last year, and a single 24" lcd. My favorite mod is the Endurace Series by Enduracers (http://www.enduracers.com/downloads.html). Combine this mod with Sebring International Raceway by the Virtua_LM group, and you feel like youre actually running in the ALMS! Download Sebring from this forum here: http://forum.emacberry.com/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=7151
When I first started with rFactor, the hardest thing for me to live without was the rotating track map. So I found an addon that gives me back what I'm most used to. Map Plugin 1.06: http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=Map%20Plugin
The FFB was an issue for me as well, and even after installing the RealFeel plugin, it still didnt seem right. Recently, I came across this which combines Leo's FFB plugin with the RealFeel plugin to give the sim a close representation of how iRacing feels. I've never tried iRacing, but doing this definately improved the feedback for my tastes. Check it out: http://www.nogripracing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242549
I'm not looking to run in a series at this time, but if anyone wants to do some casual laps in rFactor let me know.
Nice I'll try the wheel thing if it is even close to iRacing that will do for me. I'm a series racing kinda guy, like the process of preparing and the ongoing rivalry that develops so like in forza I am already preparing for a race, new tracks take me forever to learn and finding the braking points, entry and exit points keeps me busy. Oh I have the map plugin, the guys over at GBR pointed me at it. Helps my poor brain when it freezes on me
Practicing now for the touring car race, getting the hang of it, still a long way off the pace of the front runners but up with the times at the back of the pack and that will do for me as a start. This one will start at night and end as the sun comes up, so that will be interesting. Looking forward to rFactor2 with it's dynamic weather model, you can start in the sun and clouds slowly gather and rain begin to fall. Then the sun comes out and a dry line begin to develop...Now that will make for a very real experience. I hope Forza 5 goes that route. There is a lot resting on that release, the more I taste Pc sims the more I am going to want from F5.
Make sure you runs some laps at night. I find the cars can handle differently, probably to simulate cooler track temps. Make sure you know how to turn on your lights. Default is H key but it can be mapped. The game will disqualify you rather quickly if you run w/o your lights on. I'm not familiar with Spa so learning it in both daylight and dark will be interesting.
Yes, been running in the dark in off line mode. The concentration levels are of course higher and the car does seem different. but these class A touring cars are more to my likeing than the V8's. Spar is a fun track, I just need to find a couple more seconds to be comfortable somewhere in the low midfield.
Well my first race with the GBR lads (not counting the iRacing one) is on Sunday at Spar, will be running from day to night so a new experience there. Not pcked the best car, and am just running a stock tune so don't expect to feature...in fact fully expect a similar outcome as my first EUSL where I was lapped, but I have started from there before so no problem.
Well all this rFactor talk has got me reinstalling it on my pc. I finally will have another tv this week to hook the xbox upto so I can race Forza again. I'm also going to try hooking my pc upto it, 42 in lcd tv. Have always wanted to see what iracing would look like on there :)

Is there anyway I can race that one?
At first I thought it was a minor typo Knight but you continue to add an "r" at the end of Spa and this travesty cannot continue. If Spa wasn't the best track in the World Parcells could let it go but it is the best track so I cannot. I'm sure you understand.
Good luck in the race and if you get lapped at Spa...Ouch!!
Heh you right of course spar is our local convenience store and I profusely apologies. Yes it is a rum deal if you get lapped at spa, but the crash mechanics are far less forgiving than Forza and one lapse of concentration can see you limping to the pits. I of course hope not to be lapped and would dearly love not to come last...but expect the worst and hope for the best as they say.
Hope to see you out there Spaz.
So whens the endurance racing on?
Don't think a start date has been set yet mate, soon and I think on a sunday....might be waithing on another series to end but don't quote me on that.
As for the TCC I expect it would be okay, it's only into it's second race and thay let me in LOL
Group A TC is this Sunday.

2:41:780, unfortunately liveracers is down so I don't know where that is in the scheme of things, but as I started in the 50's ten seconds is a huge improvement. Okay it's a hot lap and average is in the 42 to 45's with full fuel load, I am fairly happy.
You on tonight Knight as I need to do some night racing and get used to the game with a pad.
