I know....double post......

The Alienware laptop I got my wife almost 3 years ago has decided to play dead.....or is dead, I can't really tell the difference.

here is what it does;

I push the power button, the "power on" light turns on.

if I leave it on this way for an extended period of time, the bottom gets hot and the fan turns on.

if I put in a CD, it will spin it, act like its reading something, but will not give any indication that it is running.

Here is what it doesn't do;

the hard drive does not spin.

the screen does not turn on (not just blank screen but "the computer is turned off" kind of dark

it does not play any start up sound to suggest that the problem is with the screen alone.

On one occasion it did actually start up, the screen lit, but only displayed a partial and very garbled "do you want to start up in safe mode" screen.

I'd love to have it fixed by the time we go to the LAN and if I send it out for repairs, that is not likly to happen (nor will we be able afford to go to the LAN if it gets too expensive) but, I have built computers and if I knew what was wrong I am confitdant in my abilities to fix it (provided it is not a software issue, or something that would require tons of diognostic tools that I do not have) so if anyone has any suggestions on where to start, I'd be very appreciative.

My first thoughts, and be warned that I speak only from my own limited experience: Your video card/GPU is dead and causing the system to hang during startup, hence the fact that it powers on but nothing happens. Not sure how to test for that, though. Second possible thought is that the hard drive might be physically seizing, preventing it from going through its startup processes. Might be able to bypass that if you can boot from a USB, assuming that your BIOS allows that. So, two suggestions that are probably both wrong, but good luck!

Forgot to mention that if it's really the hd binding that you should be able to hear it hanging with a stethoscope, or even by putting your ear on it. The way I got my old hd to start working again was to keep it powered but remove it from the pc, and then (I am not making this part up) tap it with a spoon. Yeah.

My first thought is The HD... just by it not spinning up in the first place. I think the bios tells you to boot in safe mode, so that is all EPROM not HD. Just my thoughts.... I don't think its a video card/GPU.

Need more information. Q: Dose the "Screen" light up on every Power up? Q: Does the Bios / Boot menu select come up on each initial power up? If you can access the Bios every power up it narrows it down to three probable causes; 1) Bad OS 2) Bad HD 3) Bad Video Card

I cannot access the Bios regularly. I got it up once but it gave me an image reminiscent of that screen that a worn out NES use to give you before you'd smack and blow into the cartridge
