Something close to my heart, lungs, kidneys

I am an organ donor.  when I first got my license it was never even a question as to if I would mark that box.

Last night it was rainy.  My wife's 17 yr old cousin was riding in the passenger seat of her friends car, another friend was in the back seat.  it was a curvy raod, wet and covered with leaves.  the driver lost control on one of the sharp turns and struck a tree head-on on the passenger side totaling the car. The airbags went off, but the car spun and slid back across the road and into a ditch.  we don't know how fast they were going, but the driver and back seat passenger walked away without a scratch, my wife's cousin couldn't remember if she was wearing a seatbelt but has a busted up nose, bruised face, severe conussion, and chipped a bone in her heel.  She'll be fine, but it is one of those moments that you wonder, what if she was not so lucky, was she an organ donor? would someone else have decided to check that box and provide her with a new organ if needed? some day when I die (most likely from doing something that started off with a "hey, watch this") will my death save someone? multiple people? give someone a second chance or  the oppertunity to live their lives in ways they couldn't before?

What if your in an accident with your wife and kid in the car.  you die, but because you aren't an organ donor they can't use one of your lungs to save your wife, and can't use your kidney so your kid has to spend the rest of their life hooked up to a dialisis machine.

all I'm saying is you don't become an organ donor for yourself... (thanks to www.xkcd.com for the comic).
