I finally earned my 1000 gamerscore on
Halo 3!!! Only 750 left to go…yes I had a good late night on Halo 3, and ran up an awesome 22 kill streak in Lone Wolves Slayer…I can’t explain how it happened and no I still didn’t get Overkill….figures…..but I have found that I have an odd talent for Oddball games….now I suck at King of the Hill and I’m ok at slayer.

In other news, I have more résumés hitting the street….but have had an interesting suggestion surface….so I need some input from the military people of 2old2play….If I decide to take a shot at a Military career, which would be the best of the services to try to become a pilot…I don’t think I want to get into aerial combat….and I don’t think I’d make a move until they could guarantee my admission into flight school…unless I could get a job as an accountant and still receive flight training….
I'm 27, in good health (for the most part) I meet the physical requirements, I am college educated and already know I can get the required score on the tests.
Now, I want the real story, not the recruiter BS they feed me anytime I ask…but keep in mind that I don’t like being separate from my wife for long drawn out periods…a few days at a time doesn’t bug me, and I understand the duration of Basic… but when the non-combat duties require me to be gone for months at a time….I’d have an issue with that….
I think I’m already too old for the Marines and Navy Flight requirements, and I would have to lose about 15lb to get to the max allowable body fat waiver….I felt so fat when I read those requirements…so which service and is it possible to say “make me a Pilot or don’t take me at all”?

I think you have as much a chance to say "take me as a pilot or not at all" as saying "make me a general to start".

I'm the same age as you and considering the military. My best friend is a pilot and says it would be easiest to sign up for the Army's 'High School to Flight School' program. I can't answer your questions about time away or being deployed though.

to quote "but keep in mind that I don’t like being separate from my wife for long drawn out periods…a few days at a time doesn’t bug me, and I understand the duration of Basic… but when the non-combat duties require me to be gone for months at a time….I’d have an issue with that" ummm..... this means you want a desk job, not a pilot's job. A buddy of mine is a pilot: he flies the PM around... and he is away from his family all the time. Shitty times too (Christmas... stuff like that) My Dad is retired military (officer: did ATC type stuff... he's a systems engineer) and he was gone 6 weeks at a time every once in a while. If you want to pilot a plane: you can take flying lessons... but it doesn't sound like you really want to be a military pilot. BUT the military needs lots of other skills....

I would say go Army as stated above, damn near every division has an aviation brigade (we got 3 at campbell, but to get a gig with 160th SOAR you've really got to have the experience and balls, it's not a first duty station). However, unless somebody man's up and turns out the lights, training (normal unit training, not basic, woc, and flight) you will be out of pocket a lot.

FYI - I have a neighbor that got his college degree from Southern Illinois University in aviation, spent 4 years in Army ROTC, and is currently sitting at Ft. Rucker waiting for a flight school opening. All the classes are full at this time. The Army is paying him as an officer but mostly he sits around waiting for a class to open up. When the queues are full, they only take the cream of the crop so good luck trying to get in. If your eyes are close there is at least one option that MIGHT work. Basically they are hard contacts that re-shape the eye. If the Army (or Air Force) finds you are using them, they WILL bounce you out but it might get you by the first physicals.
