Unintended Consequences: Petition to bring back the thumbs.

Huh... Well this is a new one for me. A double blog: Hey! Wait till the thumbs down fairy sees this. Oh wait.

And this, my gentle readers is the crux of the problem. We used to have a thumbs up/thumbs down capability. It let us know when people enjoyed our blogs, and when people didn't. The point was there was a type of feedback. That feedback was removed. Why? Because people bitched about he thumbs down fairy. The thumbs down fairy is different than a simple thumbs down. The fairy was seen to be personal: people didn't read the blog, but they just gave you a thumbs down cause you are being you. The result? I am fairly certain people are blogging less. There was no way I should have my beautiful face still up on the top of the blogs, it's been quite a while since I blogged last time.  I used to see my blog whiz off the top page in a manner of hours.

People were bitching about the thumbs down, but was it just that? Bitching?  Kinda like bitching about eating your broccoli.  You whine, but you know it's a good thing. I am fairly certain that the bitching was not really sincere. We are all adults here. We understand that people are different than us, that they value different things. "But if people don't like what I have written shouldn't they give me a thumbs up for a good argument?" No. Grow up. If you want positive feedback, then you have to take the negative too.

Deal. Learn. Grow.

If we are all big enough to put ourselves out there in the webbernets, then we are big enough to handle the "consequences" that people may not actually like us.  As adults, we should be able to learn from this. "A-ha. some people don't like when I blog about "X". Okay, why? Is it the message? Is it how I present my argument? If I am a constant victim of the thumbs down fairy, am I being percieved as a sucktacular individual? Am I sucktacular? If not, why are people getting the wrong message? Or are people just jackasses and I should ignore the thumbs down?"

By removing the feedback I can't learn. I don't know what you guys like. I don't know if what I have said rings true or if it strikes hollow. I can't adjust my writing style so that you can read something you will enjoy.

I believe it also goes one step further than that. In order to create a community, at a certain point the site has to take itself out of the picture, and there has to be a way for the community to communicate peer to peer, rather than member to site. We have removed one avenue of that communication, a simple thumbsup/thumbs down score. I know my score, I know what the community thinks of this blog.

It also removes the capability for providing encouragement. Sometimes things happen where you don't know what to say, especially if the person is a stranger or if the event is big. If I can give a thumbs up, and that person can see the dozens of thumbs up, that can ease pain knowing that we are there. This doesn't have to be for sad events; births, birthdays, graduations, weddings: it's just plain nice to see a high score at the bottom of your blog on a big day. It pulls people in. Interactions like these are the glue that holds a community together.

To sum up. I think that by removing the thumbs up/down we have removed one layer of community involvement, we have taken away the ability for people to know if the community appreciates the blog, and people are blogging less. Most importantly we have taken the ability for people to learn. Sometimes the lessons are harsh, but they are lessons all the same.

I am hereby asking you, the membership of 2old2play: Which would you rather: the ability to see your score, or the way it is now: no score. No other options: we don't want Doodi and/or DSmooth to rewrite a ton of code, we will see that in version 3.0.  I am fairly certain that this won't be too much of a problem to reveal our score to us as it was a few months ago.

Please indicate what you think in the comments below. Am I off base? Do you care? I would suggest if you want the thumbs back: gimmie a thumbs up. If you want things to stay the way they are, give me a thumbs down. The score is there, it's just invisible to me, but Doodi et al. can see it.

Thanks.

They always seemed kind of useless to me, as they are too easy to abuse (particularly the thumbs down). If people like/dislike your blog entry, they usually say so in the comments... so that would make the thumb thing redundant!

I'll repeat what I told Doodi...the thumbs should be there, but when you use it it puts a note down in the comments that says "Dastard gave you a Thumbs Up". People don't always have time to leave a comment which is why they used the thumbs. Others are afraid to voice their opinion for fear of being flamed. But with the "note" it eliminates, or at least identifies, the people who use the thumbs to harass. Not that it matters, but I'm blogging less because I'm busy, as I'm guessing others are. We are either trying to avoid being laid off or dealing with increased workloads from others being laid off. Oh, and girls...you want to see how popular you really are, dump the pics of hot chicks, seductive names, and the "beautiful faces" in the banner and see how many of what Zikan calls these "Big Bang Theory geeks" click on your blog when there aren't virtual boobies associated with them.

Ehh, I can take 'em or leave 'em. I agree it could be annoying when you got the occasional thumbs down fairy. (I've complained too about them *rolls eyes*) After awhile though, I just began to take it with a grain of salt. As for the lack of blogs....I think its many different things. Perhaps people are too busy (like Dastard said). Perhaps they just aren't in the mood. I know I quit for awhile, but I was just too busy around the Holidays to post or play. Me, (and I think I told you this) I'll post my thoughts on my blog. For good or bad. Like it or not. Its an outlet. One I enjoy. I'm not writing my blogs and looking for encouragement or discouragement (well, maybe sometimes, like when my pooch was sick). My blog, is my opinions. Sometimes silly, sometimes serious. They are what they are. So for me...I can't say I'd rally for the thumbs up or down to come back. I would like to know if something like they have on FB is an option. You either have the option of leaving a "comment" or clicking to say you "like" a persons post. I often just click "like" to let a person know I read there post but don't have the time to post on every comment.

I agree with Jedi, the comments allow for both negative or positive feedback with the username included. Plus you can add why you did/didn't like the blog.

Oh, and BTW, since the removal of them I've totally forgotten about even clicking on the thumbs up or down. I know somewhere behind the lines the numbers are there, but it seems kinda worthless to me to click it if the persons blog I'm reading can't see it. I try to leave a comment...but there are so many to keep up with I don't always get to them. :(

I really wish we still had the thumbs down so that you could see the one I just gave ya. Honestly, the thumbs down is nothing more than a way for cowardly people to be assholes without the possibility of a rebuttal. I would wager that the decline in blogging would have more to do with the Easter holiday, the economic crisis the emerging springtime and other every day things rather than the removal of the thumbs down. Just goes to show ya, you can't please everyone.People bitch about the thumbs and they are removed, now we have people complaining about them being removed.

I personally would love to see the solution Dastard outlined - a thumbs up or thumbs down auto inserts a comment to the effect with your user name. Then...if there truly is a thumbs down fairy, it's easy to spot and know a dick or douche then at face value. I enjoyed the feedback I received via the ever-moving number. Now...well I just never know whether most people found a blog useful, witty, or just downright obnoxious. Kinda like driving without your headlights on...you're moving ahead, but no idea whether you need to turn or not.

gave ya a thumbs down but not in a mean way...... i personally blog to blog. do i care if i'm read and liked? do i care to "learn" what other people want to read about in my life? do i want to know if i'm "liked"? my answer is "no" to all three. i simply don't care, if i'm interesting or if people like what i write then they'll follow me and i'll use my bookmarks number to track my likability (it's at 10, whee!). thumbs up, thumbs down equals "meh" in my opinion and is the equivalent of being the "cool kid" or in the "cool clique" in grade school........either way it matters not to me. but i do like Dastard's suggestion :)

I did not intend to offend the women on the site with this comment. I was simply repeating the observation many of the women have made to me regarding blog popularity. I apologize for any misunderstanding.

I dunno. I blog about my life and what is going on with me. i would like more comments since i know i get hundreds of hits, even thousands in a month's time. But, not many comments at all. i personally do not like getting a thumb's down without a comment. But; comments mean so much more than a plus or minus sign. And, as most of you must know, I have no virtual boobies associated with my blogs, and, like I said, I sometimes get thousands of hits in a months time.

I liked to give people thumbs up without leaving a comment - especially if they're blogging about something tough in their life or something and I had nothing else to offer in comments. As far as my blog goes, I don't miss the ratings for a few reasons. I think there could have been middle ground between the past thumbs up/down and the current nothingness, but I just don't care enough to bother with it.

Why would you care what people want you to write about, instead of writing what you want to write about. I read the blogs of people here that I have an interest in, that I like, or if I see an interesting title in someones subscribed list. Sure I read Durty's blog for the pics, but I also enjoy reading the other family stuff she posts. I read LBs blog 'cuz he's a comic guy and posts good comic stuff. I read TheDastards blog 'cuz I dream of someday pointing out an error, and because it's a great blog. So write what you want, don't worry about what anyone thinks. They will post if they want you to know. SC

I read everyone's blogs. It's nice to see what other people do on the site. I know a couple of people off the top of my head that could have blogged about doing volunteer work and they would have got the thumbs down....even though this site is 25+ a lot of people don't act like it :)

I'd love to see it return... but with that twist where the thumbs up or down is noted and reported with a name. I don't thumb down lightly... but when I do... it IS because of content. Now some people continually get a thumbs down from me... because they continually post content I don't like. :) LOL Same with the up.
