I am Legend sucked....

Watched it last night, hoping against hope that something good would come out of it. I won't do that again.

*WARNING....SPOILERS*

I Am Legend - starring Will Smith, was originally based off of an older vampire novel written by Richard Matheson. The title of the movie and the name of the main character is all the 2 have in common.

The film had more in common with the Charleton Heston film "Omega Man"....another film supposedly based off of the Matheson novel.

I am a huge believer in using CG to help tell the story...not overwhelm the film. The idea of special fx is that you aren't supposed to be able to tell. You can't help but notice how bad the fx are in this film. All of the creatures look identical and unrealistic and move in an unrealistic fashion. Yeah they are creatures....but they don't look like anything natural.

The beginning of the film was decent.....up until Nevilles first encounter with the creatures. It goes downhill from there. You really felt the sense that he was alone and that he had something to be worried about. And up until the creatures were revealed....I was convinced and worried right along with him.

But like i said....once the action picked up the movie failed in alot of ways. Unrealistic CG....and theres alot of it. The fact that there are other survivors that discovered Neville is ridiculous.

The original intent of the story...the whole reason behind the title of I Am Legend...was that the world turned into a society of vampires, except 1. Neville. Neville became the vampires boogeyman. He hunted them during the day while they slept. He was the legend....their creature that scared them.

After Hollywood had its way with the beginning and middle of the film....they had to put the cherry ontop right?

Neville dies. He does in the book....but nowhere near how he does in the film. In the novel....Neville is kidnapped and held prisoner by the creatures and he gives up and kills himself. No big flash....no blaze of glory. He sits down and gives up. It was the only way the book could have ended really. And it worked. Its not a happy story.

Hollywoods version - Neville is trapped in his underground lab with 2 survivors.....he lets the 2 survivors out through a "back exit" and stays to hold the creatures off.....as the creatures spend 5 annoying minutes beating on the plexiglass and break through......Neville drops a grenade and takes him and the room full of creatures out. While the other 2 survivors return to their little city apparantly filled with more survivors.

Garbage. Thats the film in a single word. Garbage.

If you wanna know how I Am Legend is supposed to be....go read the novel. You can get it from Amazon.com for a good price.

I'm gonna go read the book a few times to clean my brain out after that horrible horrible patch of film.

@ BAT - yeah I didn't like the fact that they didn't talk either...wish I had of mentioned that in the blog. There was no sense that it was even a new society or race...just hungry animals like the rage virus in 28 Days Later...... Mindless animals and nothing more. I do think Will Smith did a good job...and thats coming from someone who doesn't like Will Smith. He's got a great roll in a really poorly put together film. So its really not his fault. Shitty script & shitty storytelling....partly and largely due to the overuse of the poor CGI. That detracted alot from the movie for me. If you can't do it right....don't do it at all...do something else. Don't half-ass it. And thanks for the sig compliments everyone. :)

I loved the movie...Maybe it would disappoint in comparison to the book, which seems to be the majority of your complaints, but I didn't read it soooo...I loved it.

I dont think even if I hadn't read the book I would have liked it. my complaints are also about the storytelling methods overall and the lack of quality creature fx.

Outstanding sig work Gatsu!! Great stuff!!! As for the movie review, I read the book years ago and think it is a true classic! Its reversal twist of the Vampire legend has always been very cool and refreshing. I too recommend anyone that likes Sci Fi or horror pick it up. Its a quick read under 200 pages, its actually a "short story". That all having been said, I liked I Am Legend the movie. It had its faults, the over use of CG in particular as you pointed out, the ending which was way to "hollywood" for me too., and of course the fact that it is unlike the book in every-way possible. However, as a stand alone feature, I thought it was pretty good. I think Will Smith did a great job caring a majority of the film by himself. The relationship between him and his dog was great. And like you said the first 3/4's of the movie are convincing and tension filled. The shots of him hunting deer in the fields of Times Square were worth the price of admission alone for me. :-) I think my biggest complaint of the film was the fact that the creatures didn't speak. They simply growled. As a result there was no psychological aspect of the struggle between the "new" dominate species and the old that wont let go. I think the movie would have been much better if they had had some dialogue between Smith and the creatures. Especially since they did such an effective job of portraying his desperate loneliness and teetering on insanity as a result of isolation and lack of contact. It could have really been a great addition to the story to have these beings taunting him and trying to play on his loneliness to weaken him and get him to lower his guard. Of course that is essentially what Matthison so expertly portrays in his short story. So I guess I am essentially echoing your point which is that the movie didn't integrate enough from the source material :-) But still as a stand alone Sci Fi Horror flick I enjoyed it. :-) And again awesome sigs!!! - BAT

Great review Gatsu! Pretty much nailed my opinion of IAL. I love the book, it's a true classic. Reread it before the movie came out, so the movie really nosedived for me. I have to agree with one of the other posters about the creatures not speaking being a horrible idea. I didn't totally hate the movie, I just wish they would have called it something else, and not associated it with the book....
