Pottermania...

Well I started and finished reading the last Harry Potter book within a day. Don't worry, I won't say anything other than to say I really disliked the pacing of the end of the book and series. It felt rushed, muddled and grasping at straws, and, overall, it felt like she wrote it with the movie adaptation constantly in the back of her mind.

That said, I'm damn glad this series is over. Pottermania is lying in the grave and in the next two years it will be covered up and buried with the release of the last two movies. Speaking only for myself, all I can say is, "Thank God". It's been long enough.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good series, but after 7 books, (and soon, 7 movies), it got tiresome. No more will there be wild internet speculation about the release date of the next book. The story is wrapped up, for better or for worse, and there won't be any more wild internet rumors about who does what to whom in the next installment.

The only thing I take away from this series is hope that children who grew up reading Harry Potter, children who wouldn't have picked up fiction novels otherwise, will see the value of novels and literature and continue reading. I'm not holding my breath, however. Somehow I doubt this will cause a new generation to look at books and think they'd rather read than go fulfill their need for instant gratification by watching a movie or playing a video game.

I had to go to the true value hardware store on main street. I forgot about he potter event going on. They blocked off about 3-4 blocks. The hardware storing being int he middle. So I had to park a ways away and walk. Nice thing is I could walk down the middle of the road :) What I find interesting is even though the road was blocked off, people tended to stay on the sidewalks.

I too thought the book was not well put together. I thought the first 1/3 rocked...the middle part drug and the ending had too many things that didn't make sense. It was hilarious reading it though. I left the house Sat. to be able to read in peace and went up to KFC to grab something and the lady at the register saw the book laying on the seat next to me and said, "How far are you, I finished chpater 14 early this morning." Then later in the afternoon, I went up to the Pay Day Loans with my son to cash his check and the manager there had a copy of it sitting next to her. My son said, "My mom's reading that, how far along are you?" I got to read it over the weekend because of course I have to work. Now that I have finished it, the boys are taking turns. They have both read some of the other books in the series so at least they have had some reading over the summer....

I finished the book last night myself. I think it was my least favourite of the 7. It did feel a bit rushed, as well as haphazard. The pacing was all over the place too. I think part of it was due to the main three taking up a lot of time in the book - well and I guess big V as well. There really wasn't too much in the book on any of the other characters. I'm glad it is over. It was a long time coming. If it went on any longer I think I'd loose interest (psst: I'm looking at you Wheel of Time series - grrr).

Heh, Kez.. don't even mention the Wheel of Time series.. *grumble*. I mean I really enjoyed the books but it's been 10 years now since the first one was released (HP1, 1997) so I think it's time something else gets a shot at dominating the pop culture venue. Though I have to admit, it feels kinda funny that I can find legitimate HP-related gifts for my mom at Hot Topic. LOL. I might have to go back there and pick up the Slytherin crest wall hanging. Slytherin for life, yo.
