So I've been playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance a lot lately. The new characters are pretty cool, but the game was great to begin with.  I was a comic fiend as a young lad--I had subscriptions to The X-Men, Indiana Jones and a few different Spider-Man comics over the years.   Plus I was a fiend for any sort of miniseries.  Yeah, if only I'd kept all those comics rather than carrying them around in my back pocket, ripping off the covers and smearing the pages.  I still remember how much I loved that Rocket Raccoon series.

Over the years I've forgotten about the comics but apparently they've been getting along just fine without me.  Curse this damn game, it's ignited my curiosity again with its MODOK and its Grey Gargoyle. So I've been checking out the comic section at Borders and the other day I actually went into Atomic Comics. I've always been a bit apprehensive about it because well, I'm thirty-something. I was kind of afraid that I'd walk in and the Comic Store Guy from the Simpsons would be in there waiting to pounce on me as soon as I walked in.  Fortunately, it's just like any other store where you can walk around and browse unmolested.

So now I've gone through The Ultimates and Avengers Disassembled, read a couple different Ultimate Fantastic Four and some other new ones, plus I've refreshed myself on a few of the oldies--Days of Future Past, some old Moon Knight, and my all-time favorite, Secret Wars. I'm looking forward to checking out Civil War eventually, but that's one of the things that kept me out of comics so long--it so hard to figure out where to start with those big events!  Crap, I think I'm hooked again. I liked Deadpool in the game so much, and I've never read his stuff, so I picked up Deadpool & Cable and it's just fantastic.  I could see this being a serious money sink for anyone trying to collect seriously.  Ah if only I had all those old comics stored away somewhere...

There's not much point to this blog obviously. If anyone has suggestions for cool books for me to check out I'd love to hear them. I've checked out the comic forum a little bit but not too much.

Don't worry, I'm 40 and still make a monthly trip to the comic book store, only now with a few kids in tow. The entire "geek" thing has calmed down, you will be suprised what a lot of us "comic fans" do for a living. I've collected since I was a kid, but mainly old stuff. There are a couple really good new series out there. If you look at some of the writers it is like a who's who of poplular TV now writing comics (and vice versa). I only read a couple titles, but I would recommend the latest Captain America series (there may even be a graphic novel of the first several issues). I think the writer (Brubaker) did a great job with it. P.S. I was lucky, I saved my old stuff and have actually been able to parlay it into a part-time biz www.comicbooksecrets.com/blog ! Oh, and as you probably realized, look for the graphic novels of the big series (Civil War, etc.), it will save you a lot of $$$.
