A local woman died after participating in a contest to win a Wii.  The water drinking contest was held by a local radio station and the fallout has been front page news the last few days.  A tragedy for this family.  This story is also making it onto the larger game sites and AP wire.

The Story as of 1/16

I'm truely sorry for her family. I can't believe that someone at the station didn't consult an MD before the contest! They would have found out about the water intoxication as well as the possiblity of temorary/permanant damage to a persons bladder and or kidneys. I see huge lawsuits in the future.

A few years back there was a huge story in the Air Force (I was on active duty then) about an accident in basic training where this happened to a recruit. Raised quite a few eyebrows at the time and changed a lot of policy. A frat pledge also died north of here in Chico a few years back during pledge week of the same thing. The real clincher - a nurse called in during the broadcast to warn about the danger and was snubbed on air.
