Well, no windows are shattered, and my door is graffiti-free so I guess my little run-in yesterday is [hopefully] settled.
So, on that positive note, I'd thought I'd share an event that happened a few days ago.
I was at work, and I was going to throw away some garbage in the bin outside. I lifted the lids and to my surprise, there was a little stow-away inside.
Apparently, a small raccoon had made its way into the bin, and was huddled in the far corner.
The poor little critter. I felt bad for it, and I wanted to shoo it out before people threw garbage on it, leaving it stuck in there. Garbage pick-up is on Thursdays, so if it stayed in there, it'd wind up as a mammal pancake.
The garbage bin is pretty big, approximately 8'x6'x4' and is pretty heavy, but I'm probably the strongest guy at my workplace and figured I could flip it over, if need be. But that plan required me to pick up the spilled garbage, so I put it on the back burner.
So instead I grabbed a small skid [pallet] and gently placed it inside the bin, as a makeshift incline. I tried to motivate the 'coon with a nudge of a hockey stick, but it wasn't moving too fast. I could see it was breathing really hard, so the poor thing must have been spooked. Then a sales rep suggested a lacrosse goalie stick. A goalie's crosse is pretty wide, but I couldn't really scoop it up without putting some pressure on it. I played with the idea of using two goalie sticks, creating some half-arsed "salad tong" but in the end, I had lots of work I had to get back to, so I opened both lids of the bin, then pointed at the raccoon, then the skid, and lastly the sky.
Thirty seconds later, the little critter scampered out of the bin with the help of my "skid ladder" and hustled across the street.
Awwww, I'm a real rescue ranger, eh? Even though I love my bacon, and my KFC [sorry, Pamela!] I have a soft spot for small animals.
