Some of you may or may not be aware but there is actually a cadre of dedicated people that create, edit, code and post material for 2o2p called “press and writers forum.” I was one of the first members of the group when it was formed, got kicked out, was invited to participate again, got booted again and eventually as a result of long association and nepotism was brought back into the fold.
That brief history was just a preface to explain what I think will be the ultimate failure of this, the first column attempted as part of the “2o2p v3.0” revision that our grandchildren may one day enjoy. People- even those with writing skills, dedication to the community ethos of 2o2p, generous spirits, helpful attitudes and remarkable tolerance, generally just want me to shut the fuck up and go away. So when Drost “volunteered” me to attempt an “Ask Bubba” column, I ignored him.
All self-deprecation aside though, I am a great writer.
Not just great, really great.
The fact that my genius goes largely unappreciated, unpaid and unnoticed is typical of a lot of great writers. However, I’m in year eight of a ten year plan that ends in my death Kees-style so wonder not if I am in Mexico or if I jumped- I jumped. Once that is accomplished you will definitely be reading more about me in the national print media.
I’m not just a great writer, I am also phenomenally smart.
Most of the time I only have to listen to half of what you are saying before I start formulating a pithy response. I win most games of Trivial Pursuit, Boggle, Monopoly and Apples to Apples I play. When I don’t win it’s because someone else got lucky or is too dumb to recognize a winning strategy and succumb to it. When other people disagree with me I don’t even need to formulate a counter-argument- I can just knowingly shake my head, purse my lips and make them feel as though they lost argument without me even trying.
I know what you are all thinking- “who does this guy think he is, DSmooth?”
I’m not.
The primary difference is that I don’t actually believe those things about myself. They’re little bits of ego I cling to feed an age old inferiority complex. I’ve got the same baggage we all do. I’m a little more aware of it then some, a little less then others. I write a little better then a few people and a lot worse then many others. I’m a little smarter than rocks and a lot dumber than a good dog. However, I do have an enduring faith that this website can be a place where adult gamers can come together and start carving a new social landscape for themselves.
One thing that endures is my belief that if you want it, you can make 2o2p into a place where you get to try things you have never tried before. It is a place where you can learn about gaming , tech, internet culture, the administration of websites, podcasting, video editing, graphic design, fund-raising, event planning and management, what kind of people you like, what kind you don’t, how to crimp CAT 5, and an incredible little girl named Megan and her incredible family.
Since I believe these things it would be hypocritical not to give this a shot. When something you love wants you to take a crack at something you can say no, but it’s more fun to step to the plate and try. So here it is, the first of a few rambling diatribes by me. If some of you hate it enough you’ll get involved and start writing the anti-Bubba column. I promise to strongly support any efforts to get that going, but we already know that I could get kicked out of the Press and Writers forum at any moment.
I’m not real big at following rules so I won’t have any but here are a few housekeeping details to make this workable.
I’ll write weekly. There is no telling when columns will get posted, but I’ll commit to something every week. If interest is not there to meet that volume I’ll make up my own questions or quit writing.
I’ll set up a thread for public questions and you may PM me anonymous ones. If the question gets posted in the thread you may expect public ridicule, PM questions will be exempt. Use the thread only for questions. Feel free to create your own “I Hate Bubba Thread” or post vitriol in the comments section of the posts.
I will not answer every question. I’ll pick and choose the ones to write publicly and may get help from the Press and Writers with that. I may answer some via PM, I might not. I won’t share those questions with anyone. I have been PM’ed one question already so here is the very first Anonymous-Bubba-Response-to-A-Private-Question…
MJ: If they are raised and red, stop pulling on it and switch to boxers.
I’ll take questions on any topic, but certain topics will have a better chance of getting answered, hopefully that will become clearer.
I absolutely promise to read all hate mail.
Finally, I just want to make absolutely certain we all realize this…I AM NOT A LAWYER/DOCTOR/PRIEST/PERSON YOU CAN SUE FOR DAMAGES. But DSmooth is.
