Women Surpass Men Online

Women are making their mark in the Video Game industry. While guys still make up the majority of game players, 64% of online game players are ladies!

This is according to a recent Nielsen Entertainment report who interviewed 2,200 active gamers in the month of July. An Active gamer is defined as someone who is 13 years or older, plays on at least one game device for at least one hour a week. Game devices are everything from handheld systems and phones to consoles and PC's.

Emily Della Maggoria, Sr. V.P. of Nielsen Interactive Entertainment said "The expansion of next-generation hardware and technology in the marketplace is simultaneously delivering new ecosystems of social exchange, interactive entertainment, media experiences and advertising models," While the casual gaming segment is growing, gamers have very little brand loyalty and hop form one game to another. Rolling gamers over to monthly subscriptions for online games remains a challenge for this market segment.

The Casual Gamers spend on average USD $9.00 a month on gaming for non-online games while online Casual Gamers spent an average of USD $26.00 per month. What's interesting is gaming on the Xbox 360 help encourage more spending by the Casual Gamers with the cash outlay being USD $35.00 per month. 33% of active gamers own an Xbox 360 and Nintendo is right behind with 30%, Sony's Playstation 2 still has the majority of active gamers.

In terms of playtime, active gamers play for 14 hours a week on a non-portable game platform such as the Xbox 360 while portable systems saw 17 hours of gaming per week.

PC gaming is far from dead, 64% of active gamers play on a PC. At one time the gaming industry questioned how much longer the PC would last with increased competition in the console marketplace. The survey would seem to indicate that the PC gaming market is pretty solid and will remain a dominant platform in the gaming space. This is probably why Microsoft is pushing the Games for Windows concept.

So what does all this say? In sort our industry is growing, picking up new years. The Casual Gamers market is were a lot of the growth is happening which we're seeing so much focus there. Things like Wii's Virtual Console and Xbox 360's Live Arcade are designed to grab the attention of those non-gamers and convert them to casual gamers with fun pick up and play games.
