Recently a fellow 2old2play member snapped a shot of what appears to be a Halo 3 promo box sitting at his local FYE retail store. This is not the first time a Halo 3 promotion has been spotted either. Earlier this year, a member of HBO posted a similar photo from his local FYE in greater detail. Many believe the image was photoshopped by the poster, when later it was found that FYE had taken it into their own hands to Photoshop a 2 into a 3. They were even offering Reserves for the game! With no confirmation from Bungie it would appear that retail chains are taking promotions into their own hands and using Halo 3. But why don't they admit it?
Just after the post from our member, I began receiving tons of emails from other members who had seen the Halo 3 promos. Oddly enough, everyone had the same story to tell. Most would see the promo and immediately ask the manager what the deal was. In every account the managers would say they had no idea why it was up there.
From what 2o2p could gather it seems as though these promos are coming mostly from FYE, with a few other store showing some sort of Halo 3 promo. When 2o2p contacted a local FYE we were told that there was no Halo 3 Reserve copy because nothing in their system contained Halo 3. It is possible that this store simply had no promos up at the time.
Oddly enough, even GameStop has been selling pre-release reserve copies from their own web site since the summer. So do these stores have some sort of information that we don't? How can they begin selling a game that has not even been announce to the pubic yet? It is especially concerning when a large store like FYE chooses to use the hype of a non-existant game to help boost the sales of the new Xbox 360. The fact that they are playing dumb seems to be a further insult to their customers.
In the end, Halo 3 has yet to be uttered from the lips of Bungie employees and will not be a reality until that day. Given the success of the game it is almost certain that it will return in some form. Even so, it is a shame that some retail companies must use these sort of tactics to sell more product and not even account for them.
