Like many of the people on 2old2play I purchased Oblivion this past week for some RPG action. Much to my dissatisfaction, I found that the load times were entirely to long.
Each time you enter a city (loading...), enter a room (loading...), enter a dungeon (loading...), or move to a new area you must load from the disc. Luckily Bethesda seems to have release information on a fix for people with really long load times in their own forums. Hopefully it can help suffers like me with the miles of load screens I have been forced to site through.
From the Bethesda Forum:
"Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360s that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.
To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one. Once you see the “Bethesda Softworks” logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.
Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data."
I have not personally tried this fix and don't know if I suffer from the "overly fragmented" cache but I certainly hope so. If what I experience is the normal load times I will be very disappointed. Let 2old2play know how your load times have been and if this fix helps to speed them up.
