
Anyone counting Nintendo out of the Next Gen race better rethink their opinion.
Nintendo released their quarterly earnings and posted monster gains this quarter. They had a 72 percent gain in their second fiscal quarter helped largely to the new DS Lite portable and the new Super Mario title for the DS.
Nintendo's income rose to $327 million due to a 59 percent increase in sales for their second fiscal quarter ending Sept. 30th. On Oct. 3rd, Nintendo raised their net income forecast for their fiscal year end which is March 31st, 2007. Originally their forecast was 83 billion yen, but they have increased that projection to 100 billion yen.
On the heels of that announcement, Nintendo announced they are increasing shipment forecasts for this next fiscal quarter which covers the holiday shopping season Originally Nintendo projected 17 million DS Lite units shipping by the end of their fiscal year but now they have raised that projection to 20 million units. Also increased are the projected number of DS games being shipped, that's increased from 82 million up from 75 million projected. Current shipping levels of the DS Lite are 100,000 units per week and it is still selling out in some of the busiest stores in Tokyo.
Next month on Nov. 19th, Nintendo will release it's newest console, the Wii. Nintendo is forecasting 6 million Wii consoles and 17 million games will be sold by the end of their fiscal year which again is March 31st 2007.
Nintendo stands a good chance at getting a lot of install base. Their wireless system is $50 cheaper than the wired Xbox360 Core, it has a revolutionary controller and it's ongoing costs for games are $10 cheaper than either Playstation 3 or Xbox360. The budget minded family home will have a hard time not giving Wii consideration.
