The battle for exclusive titles is starting to heat up. What can we expect to see for exclusives?
With many developers doing multi-platform releases and developers saying Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 games will look almost the same, it seems exclusive titles is what will sell consoles.
The Xbox 360 has 48 exclusives either out or in development. Of those 48, 23 of them are being published 1st party by Microsoft Game Studios. The rest are 3rd party titles across 15 different publishers.
Playstation 3 has 35 exclusives in development. Of those 34, 20 of them are Sony or Sony Online Entertainment 1st party titles. The remaining 14 titles are split across 7 3rd party publishers.
Lastly Wii has 40 exclusives in development. Of their 40 exclusives, 15 are 1st party Nintendo titles and the other 25 are split across 16 different 3rd party publishers.
So far Sony and Microsoft have traded some exclusives. Sony lost some games like Assassins Creed and Grand Theft Auto but gained titles like Oblivion and F.E.A.R. which were Xbox 360 exclusives. The 3rd party support for Playstation 3 seems pretty week compared to Wii and Xbox 360. If this doesn't change, Playstation 3 could suffer a lack of new games to play. I'm sure this is just a temporary situation brought on by launch supply issues. The Xbox 360 saw a similar drought in game releases over it's first six months following launch as well. When it costs so much to make these next get HD games, developers and publishers want to make sure they make their money back. They can't do that with a 400,000 or 500,000 install base.
Nintendo support seems to be very strong out of the gate. 3rd parties seem to really be embracing the Wii's innovative game play option. They are no doubt inspired by the price, launch quantity and the smaller development costs. With the Wii's graphic's not really being able to compare, the only ace the Wii has is it's new play style and cheap purchase price. Launch support is strong because Nintendo will have 4 million units for launch day and another 9-11 million by the end of 2006. That's more Xbox 360's than Micrsoft has sold to date who also have a target number of 10 million by the end of the year.
