John Carmack talks a bit about their next secret project, and how they're tackling it on multiple consoles along with the PC.
John Carmack hints at their new project but does not give it a name or a date. However, he did say that it should be something they can talk about at the next QuakeCon (a year away).
QuakeCon is a glorified LANfest that ID and a few other companies use as a platform to talk about their new games, technologies and opinion of the market. It has been said to be the "woodstock of gaming" being that most of the workers are volunteers that put the 4-day event together.
During John's keynote address he says that the next generation game will "hopefully" be simultaniously launched on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC. He mentioned that the PlayStation 3 has a little more horse power to utilize but is harder to develop for and they have to learn how to really use the power of the Cell Processor.
So far, Carmack stated that most of the next-generation game has focused efforts on AI and gameplay, but not in the games presentation. This is normal for game development, nobody starts by making it look good and then adds functionality later. Well, no games that are successful. Carmack did mention that it will have the typical stunning graphics.
During his address, he spoke a great deal about multi-processors and how he sees them being taken advantage of in games. Using the multi-processor resources with a good development foundation creates a huge amount of additional speed and power. Carmack talks about how the consoles are a little more stable and understood for multi-processing power over the typical PC given that the PC hardware is not consistant and varies from consumer to consumer.
As normal, his keynote speech goes well into the depth of technologies bits and bytes. Technical savvy gamers will grasp his speech better then the average Joe. He is a smart guy, no doubt. The amount of research that goes into ID's technology is simply amazing. There is definately a reason why ID was the great foundation for first-person-shooters.
