Waaaay back in the day, before match making, before Timmies, back before the cultural revolution of Halo 2- there was a different kind of fragging going on. One that didn’t let you go on-line to play your buddies. One that made you be within smacking distance (or controller-throwing distance at least) of your adversary/best friend’s head. Hearts would race. Faces would be made. Screams like a 5-year-old boy at Michael Jackson’s house were all on display for everyone's enjoyment.
The game I’m talking about is GoldenEye 64.
This was a life changing game for me. I didn’t like first person shooters. I had played Doom and Wolfenstein 3D and had never really got into them. Then along came this little old movie game. Something about "007." I knew the name but never watched any of the movies. I saw GoldenEye the first in the theater...pretty good flick. I thought the “dude from Mrs. Doubtfire” did a pretty good job of being a cool debonair spy. Then came the game!
This was the first game to me that the characters actually looked like the people from the movie. Not only that, but here I was actually playing out scenes that I had seen in the movie! Every thing from dropping in the stall in the bathroom, to bungee jumping down the dam, to the big satellite for the climax of the game. Suddenly, I was James Bond- and I was a GOOD 007!!!
Not long after I tried the multi-player. First with a buddy, then, full-on-four-player-spy-killing action. I didn’t know it then, but it had everything in a FPS that I would want for years to come. It had a multitude of different weapons and gadgets. Who could forget the crummy klobb gun? Or the too-pimp-for-words RC-P90. Add to that the pure joy of killing a buddy when you’re on the other side of the map with proximity mine...Pure bliss!
Now contrary to how it may sound I’m not writing this article as a review for GoldenEye 64, it’s more of a preview. See this link?

This is a very important link to you if you’re a fan of GoldenEye 64 like I am. Now I’m sure everyone here knows what the Half Life 2 Source Engine is and is capable of. If not go here:

These guys are making a GoldenEye mod for the Source engine. All of the maps from the original game are being recreated and so are the weapons. They are even including cheat game modes- such as paintball, into the mix. Best of all it will be a free download. Well if it doesn’t get hornswoggled by the Bond IP police.
I don’t have Half-Life 2, but if this mod sees the light of day, I'll be on it like white on rice.
Well I have to go now...MI6 is calling...
