Gears of War After Hours Event

On Sat, Oct 21st most EB Games and Game Stop stores re-opened for a crowd of hard core Gears of War fans wanting every last taste of the game prior to launch Nov 8th. My Game Stop said they were actually going to have a Midnight opening to sell the game as soon as the clock ticks over to Nov8th. That's way past my bedtime but I just may have to load up on Monsters and be young again.

The After Hours event consisted of a non-interactive DVD flick staring who else, Cliffy B. The movie opened with Cliffy saying everyone is play testing the game right now, different floors of Epic Games are playing different aspects of the game : Single Player, Versus and Co-Op. They do multiple playthroughs a day to try and find all the bugs prior to launch.

Once Cliffy was finished with the intro, we saw a play through from the opening cut scene to in-game action through what was probably 1/2 the first level. More than what we've seen of the level to date, so we did get to see some new footage. No chainsaw action or curb stomping was seen though. The player started up the chainsaw to use it but got hit in the process. Any weapons that have to 'charge up' go back to idle if you get shot before making the kill. The footage lasted 15 minutes or so and then it was back to Cliffy.

With Cliffy back on the screen he said on Nov 12th, there will be a ton of Gears of War things going on over Live. Lots of content, tournaments, game with fame (with ya you guessed it... Cliffy).

Each place doing the After Hours event were given a number of promotional items to give out. What was available seems to vary. My Gamestop gave away a ticket with 2 unlock codes for a Theme and a Picture Pack as well as a metal dog tag and chain, but they were only giving it out to people who pre-ordered. Other people have reported getting temporary tattoos, posters and a lithograph. Some stores I guess handed things out to anyone while others only gave the swag out to pre-ordered people.

I just want to conclude with how ghetto my Game Stop is. The lock was busted on the Xbox360 kiosk so they showed it on a PS2 and a standard definition 4x3 TV. Nice. At least I got a dog tag, those were only available internationally prior to this event.
