Free Game Servers...by Verizon?

Verizon sees the light: Gaming good! Yet another area for Verizon to reach out and take - hopefully we, the gamer, benefit.

Verizon will be launching its PlayLinc service, currently in beta, to nab the gamer and get them playing games online...for them. PlayLinc was built by Super Computer International, a company that Verizon has funding in.

What can you do with the service?
  • Chat (VoIP or AOL instant messaging)
  • Browse for game servers
  • Manage teams
  • Launch games.

And now? Configure and launch game servers - FREE OF CHARGE. You must be itching to have the answer to the question "what games?"

  • Counter-Strike
  • Half-Life 2
  • Quake 4
  • Day of Defeat
  • UT 2004

With more games coming online for gamers to manage soon. Like other online services in this realm, those that manage the game can select 'public' or 'private' game types so that it can be a friendly game of death or a public frenzy.

What does this mean for game server sites that exist today? Fear. Small time independant services are pinned up all over the world that host games for a fee, ranging from USD $20 to well over USD $300. Many clans/guilds/friends chip in to pay for such a service - Verizon is telling you to come to their side and get that all for free? Smaller companies will have to compete with the deep pockets of Verizon and its mission to dominate yet another genre of communications.

What does that mean for gamers? More competition, more savings, and more fun. Sites like 2old2play will soon be able to host a large array of games without having to press for donations? Rock On!

Verizon will do well to find a company like Xfire and nab that sucker up so they can complete the circle of gaming communication.
