Yes, it's true. You can now go to EBGames or Gamestop's website and download a few games. The service is new, so the "good games" selection is limited.
The current selection is:
- Worms Armageddon
- Airport Tycoon 3
- Ski Resort Extreme
- Daemonica
- rFactor
- Civilization IV
- 1942 (yes, that capcom game)
- Another World (aka Out of This World)
- and a lot more...
The game selection is fairly large but most of the games are not hot sellers. CivIV might be one of the bigger ones in the list. Unless your a big fan of Ancient Tri-Jong, Alpha Queue, Alien X, Alchemist Wizard and others.
Going through the list I've noticed some of these games, like Another World, and Alpha Queue have been available to download from other services (i.e. Alpha Queue, a LargeAnimal game, is available straight from LargeAnimal). I am sure, if you dig through the list, you'll find PopCap games and other downloadable distributed products that have exited before EBGameStop started their service.
Is this going to change our future horizon for gaming? It is cheaper to sell bits and bytes then full boxes of products which requires stocking, shipping delays, walk-in retail outlets and other costs associated with physical game retail.
This also gives PC gamers a little taste of what Xbox Live Marketplace is all about...
