Atari has been in the news recently, selling intellectual property off in order to reduce costs and invest in their future.
Atari posted a net loss of $7.1 million for its ficsal 2007 first quarter (ending June 30th, 2006). This sounds very bad but its actually good news considering they lost $32.8 million over the same period one year ago.
The recent sales of Timeshift, Stuntman, Driver and their Reflection studio developers has raised $37.0 million. This money will feed back into the company to lay the ground work for the future. The nest egg was needed to keep Atari building future high quality games.
All other product lines will continue to see games, such as Test Drive Unlimited for the Xbox 360. Another important product Neverwinter Nights 2 will release as it was intended. Atari continues its design for the Wii, Playstation 2, PSP, Nintendo DS, and others. So do not count them out!
Atari is simply evolving with the times. Many companies hit some low spots and post losses and failures but a quality company learns to come out of the ruts, hold their head high, and show its competitors that it is indeed a contender.
