Apple has said it will be launching portable video games for the iPod music and video players. Downloadable through iTunes.
A few of the games they've mentioned, Tetris and Bejeweled will be downloadable directly from iTunes. According to Apple, the iTunes Store now offers $4.99 downloads of popular video games for their fifth generation iPods, including Tetris, Mahjon and Mini Golf from Electronic arts.
They will also be hosting Namco's Pac-Man along with PopCap games Zuma and Bejeweled. You'll also find Cubis 2 by FreshGames and an Apple version of Texas Hold'em and Vortex.
Will this effect the Nintendo DS? Probably not as much as Apple will hope, given their iPod design is an innovative MP3 player but is not designed specifically to game. The Nintendo DS has gaming as its primary focus (although an MP3 player will be out for that soon enough).
Overall, a great additional reason to buy an iPod over any competing MP3 player and games will be as easy to access as podcasts.
