Official reports are now in, stating that support for the popular DivX video encoding format has been confirmed for a future update on the PlayStation 3.
DivX is widely recognized as one of the better video formats for compressing long lengths of video into a fairly small file, while still maintaining a fair level of quality — in other words, it’s great for pirated movies. A press release sent out stated that the update is already unlocked for PS3 Software Development Kits and will be let loose to the masses in the near future:
DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date.
Analysts still think DivX will come to the Xbox 360, despite long-running rumors and Microsoft’s reluctance to use the format.
