40GB PS3 Announced while 80GB Drops $100

Sony is taking the gloves off for this holiday's shopping season and has announced a 40gb Playstation 3 at a more consumer friendly $399.99 price point while removing a cool $100 from their 80GB model.

Microsoft previously announced a $50 price drop on the Premium making it $349.99. As with most holiday seasons we will also see a bundle which includes two games; Forza and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. That gives Microsoft some good competition since you will get the Playstation 3, it's BluRay movie playback and a copy of Spider-man 3 on BluRay for a similar price point.

This holiday season should be a good match up between the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. With the new price drop on the Playstation 3, owners of other consoles that couldn't afford a Playstation 3 may be enticed now to give Sony's console a try. At $399, the Playstation 3 makes a cheap BluRay movie player or Linux computer even if you don't want one for gaming.

"This holiday season we'll be able to offer attractive retail pricing with a broad portfolio of outstanding games including Ratchet & Clank(R) Future: Tools of Destruction(TM), THE EYE OF JUDGMENT(TM), Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), Heavenly Sword(TM), Call of Duty(R) 4: Modern Warfare, Assassin's Creed(TM), Haze(TM) and RockBand(TM)."
