On Friday night, we will be running a Rock Band tournament. There will be no cost to enter, however, you must be a member in good standing of 2o2p and have purchased your lan ticket. (Prizes and Time TBD)
After last year’s tournament, we learned a few things:
- Lots of numbers + lots of alcohol do not mix. We will be moving to a points system, based on star achievement. This way people can play whatever level of song they want.
- DON’T bump the projector tables or switch out profiles after each map.
- Don’t allow beer or absinthe to be placed on the projector tables.
- Bands need to stay together and be ready to play. We have only a little time to complete the tournament.
- Alcohol + Rock Band = loss of clothes. Don’t ask me why, but it happened.
- We’re doing it on Friday night so that the Halo tournament can take all day Saturday.
- No Fail will be turned on so that everyone will have fun.
- N0game will not be “too” drunk this year.
Without further ado, here’s what you need to do...
Step 1: Get Prepared
- Get a band together (Drums, Guitar, Bass, and Singer)
- We will be playing on members' personal sets, so please be gentle. If you want to play on anything different, feel free to bring it. (Some restrictions apply. See below.)
- Rock Your Faces Off!! We will be drinking and having a good time. That's what it's about.
Step 2: Practice
We will be having three tiers of progression through the tournament. In order to move onto the next tier, you have to play/score well. The songs chosen were meant to be FUN, and we are going to try and include as many people as possible. The tiers and rules are as follows:
- Two bands will be performing at the same time on different screens, sort of a Face Off. Both bands play ONE predetermined song, and then get to pick one song of their choosing to play themselves and force the other band to play as well (3 songs total with some songs restrictions). In the best interest to keep the tournament moving, we are suggesting to keep the song you choose under 5 min. Also, you can't play the same song twice.
- Depending on the number of bands we have playing, the bottom 50% will be cut. For example, 8 bands start, after the 1st tier, 4 bands will be cut. After the 2nd Tier another the top 2 bands will move onto tier 3. In case there are ties everyone will move on if they are in second place. Same rules from the 1st tier apply to the 2nd tier. The 3rd tier will be slightly different, with player chosen songs replaced by 1 random song that all bands will have to play for points.
- Each band will be given a veto if they don't like the song chosen, either for difficulty, it sucks, or whatever. There will be some songs on auto veto, either for severe difficulty, length or suckage. The winners get stuff.
- Scoring will be determined by a points system centered around how many stars your band earns. (I.E. If you play on expert and receive 5 stars, you will get 5 points, 4 stars = 4 points etc…) If you play on Hard, you will suffer a one point negative penalty to your band’s final tally. (I.E. Your band earns 5 stars, then they will receive 4 points). This will continue to occur as your difficulty declines. Your lowest difficulty determines your penalty.
*Special note: Gold stars = no points = join a real band. If we wanted to see a concert, we wouldn’t have gone to the LAN.
1st Tier Songs:
- "Alive"
- Each band chooses 1 song each
At the end of the 1st tier, the bands will be cut by 50% using the same scoring system.
2nd Tier Songs
- "The Middle"
- Each band chooses 1 song each
At the end of the 2nd tier, the top two bands will move onto the 3rd tier.
3rd Tier Songs
- "Almost Easy"
- Each band plays the same random song. Each band is allowed one (1) veto for the random song. Some songs will already have an automatic veto TBD as needed.
Songs over five minutes long will not be available until the last round.
When you sign up at the LAN please list your chosen songs, so we can make sure whether they are available, or need to be downloaded before the tournament starts. If you have any questions about a specific song, please feel free to send a PM.
Rules:
- No Cheating
- Each person can only be in 1 band
- You can use your own instruments
- Drum Mods Are Allowed (gum rubber, alt pads, penny/nickel mod, sock cover etc...)
- Double Bass Pedal mod is allowed this year.
- Guitar mods are allowed except for: mods that affect star power.
- Mic Stand is allowed
- Please choose songs that are semi-fun to play. No one wants to sing cannibal corpse, and all of the other fellow gamers don’t want to hear you sing it either.
Auto Veto on Blackened, RTTH, GGHT, Blinded, Boston Foreplay/longtime, Timmy, DOA band, Hammerhead, Snow.(These are subject to change as content is released, and as people complain). THIS YEARS SONGS TBD by Red Devils.
Have FUN.
FAQs:
Hey I can't find a singer, can we still play?
- Yes you can, but you will suffer a -1 penalty to your song total.
- There will be plenty of people who are drinking, and wouldn't mind singing a song or two. (we'll see how it goes)
Hey why did you choose these songs? They suck!!!
- We agreed to choose songs that: 1) could be sung, 2) weren't insanely long, 3) were around medium-hard difficulty, 4) wouldn't mind hearing over and over again, 5) because after playing more than 100 songs, we said screw it. 6) the prizes are Rock Band 2 related, so that’s what we are playing.
Why the changes this year?
- Last year was chaotic, having never organized a RB tournament before plus alcohol equaled a need to streamline.
- We will be trying to speed things up.
- There are bands that are really good, and as such, points related to performance, instead of insane accuracy, may make the tournament closer.
Can we bring memory cards with our profiles?
- No, last year that little issue resulted in a calibration issue that cost us 20 minutes. If you’re a lefty, flip the sucker at the beginning.
