Japan Doesn't "Get" The Xbox 360

Is it a marketing problem, lack of Japanese-style games or just a pure dislike for the Xbox in Japan?

1up.com is reporting some initial sales figures on the Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 in Japan.

November 6th through the 12th shows unit sales looking like:

  • Xbox 360: 3,864 units
  • PlayStation 3: 81,639 units
These figures, even with a margin of error, are pretty clear cut. Japan doesn't care about the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 figures, however, do match that of the launch count. Sony is definitely winning the battle but it's clear they would have made a huge profit and extreme sales figures had they supplied Japan with a real launch - not just the short end of the inventory.

Did the PlayStation 3 own the market? Not exactly. The Nintendo DS Lite sold 148,147 units in that time frame while the PSP can boast 19,123 units and the PS2 16,157 units.
