Ruff Day

I woke up at 3am this morning with my dog unable to walk and my girl unable to sleep. My pup, Nygel, who is now 12 years old, has diabetes and has to take insulin twice a day to keep his sugar in check. This morning, he was unable to walk or even really keep his head up. I was terrified that it was time to say goodbye to him. You have to understand that this dog has been in my life longer than both my niece and nephew combined. He is an incredible soul and one of my best friends, next to my girl. Not sure what I would do without him.

I called into work and took the pooch to the vet to see if he had any answers. Well it turns out that the insulin we gave him was apparently bad and not doing its job, causing Nygel's blood sugar to plummet and cuasing all sorts of issues. We got some new insulin and he seems much better now. Tired, but still with us. Anyway, it was a long an rough day. Time for bed. Final note, always cherish the moments you have. They can be taken away without notice.

We have a 13yr old lab so I know how you feel. Every time he gets an injury, we freak a little. Usually, the "injury" is just a foot that fell asleep while he was napping, but you know what I mean. Get some rest and get Nygel a new toy tomorrow.

Hope he makes a full recovery dude. One of my cats has been with me for 16 years now. I dread the day I have to let him go.

actually if the insulin was bad, his blood sugar would be really high :) Never knew dogs could get diabetis.. that's too bad. He should recover though. Does he have a little glucose meter that you have to prick his paws for a blood sample ?

Glad he's OK. I'm fighting a sick pooch right now too. It stinks.

Thanks for all the comments and support folks. Nygel is doing much better this morning. He is still a bit lethargic, but back to his old self. Tank, we have to take him to the vet once a month to get his glucose checked, no home kits are available :?)

WB, my wife works for a vet and one of our cats is diabetic. We purchased a home test kit and it has settings for dogs and cats. They do exist and make the glucose curves MUCH cheaper to do on your own.
