Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden, Oh How I Love Thee...

I've joined 2old2play to be in a Halo clan, but darn it if I don't sometimes like other games better.

Especially "Ninja Gaiden 2". God, that game is awesome! The speed, the blood, the decapitations! It is by far the most violent game I have ever played in my life. And one of the best, by a long shot. I play it every night.

My goal? World Domination. Okay, maybe not. Actually, I just want to achieve maximum NG2 gamerscore. Only 1,250 points - is that really so much to ask? If only for one little problem: Mission Mode. Mission Mode is the most bone-crushingly hard game mode I have ever encountered. And yet, I will endure! I've already beaten 19 missions on Master Ninja, with only 5 left to go. But boy, are they doozies!

I have a confession to make. Although I love my clan, 2old2playHalo, as well as my clanmates, sometimes I'd rather play Ninja Gaiden. (Gasp!) Yes, it's true. I'm sorry. I can't seem to help my addiction. The fresh spray of blood calls my name!

It's kind of amazing really, how games are. One minute I'm upstairs playing "Super Mario Galaxy" with my 7 year old son. And the next, I'm down in the basement playing something so mind-numbingly violent that by all rights it should make me a sociopath (good things games don't actually work that way!). And both can be so darn fun.

Ah, Ninja Gaiden... My love for the game started at Age 11, with the original NES Ninja Gaiden. You know, I never beat that game then. Couldn't pull it off. It was nearly 20 years later that I did beat it. Beat all 3 of them, in fact. That was my 20-year old "bucket list". To beat Mike Tyson in Punch Out, Jaquio in Ninja Gaiden, and Jason in Friday the 13th. And I did 'em all! Then I beat Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja... and now comes Ninja Gaiden 2 - my nemesis.

It's a love/hate thing, really. The game pisses me off royally. Yet I still keep going back to it. It's like an abusive relationship. Only I can't seem to grow a pair and walk away. It hurts so good, baby!

And while we are talking about abusive relationships... Tonight I watched "Five Easy Pieces" starring Jack Nicholson. That movie really pissed me off at the end. What a waste of my life! I wish I could get those 97 minutes back. (Come on Jack, whaddaya doin' to me here?!) If that movie is on TV sometime, avoid at all costs!

(That has nothing to do with Ninja Gaiden. I just felt like throwing it in.)

I wish more people in my clan shared my love for this awesome game. But they're mostly all Halo addicts (sigh). There's no helping them! Oh, well. To each his own :)

Don't worry, I won't tell. I would rather play the Mass Effect series than Halo. Shhhh.

I fully understand. NG for the NES is one of my fondest childhood memories, and I actually beat it some years ago. I considered myself pretty good at Ninja Gaiden. Beat the game on Hard difficulty, although never attempted Very Hard. I was still amazed at some videos of players pulling off impossible combos, but I could definitely hold my own. Defeating Alma on Hard while taking virtually no damage is one of my fondest gaming moments ever. Then NG2 came around. Oh boy. After a good amount of swearing and sweating, I beat it. Moved onto Mentor... only to find that, conceited as I was of my above-average skill, I had a hard time getting through the first level. I haven't touched it in a good two years now, I'm guessing, but it's still a dream in the closet: 1250 gamerpoints on that. There are some games where getting 100% completion is hard, but I don't care for them. The few times I've seen 1250 on someone's profile for NG2, however, my jaw has dropped. No glitching, no achievement boosting with friends, nothing Pure, unadulterated skill. PS: stunning scene caused by dropping framerate: toward the end, going up that endless ladder, killing hundreds of fiends while racking 100+ hit combo. Beautiful.

Thanks for all the nice comments, guys! I forgot that people can actually read what I wrote here :) Lucazzo, I've heard that Mentor is hardest during the first 3 levels. After that, it eases up. And I've also heard that if you can make it through those on Mentor, then you've got what it takes for Master Ninja! I agree on the endless ladder. That level is hard to forget. It has to be one of the coolest moments in gaming, ever.

Huh, good to know. I tend to have a game that I keep as "I'll pop it in for an hour just for kicks", and I'm lacking one at the moment. Perhaps I'll give NG2 another try. I know I'll be too damned satisfied if I can get through Mentor mode.
