Forming a Halo Player - Part 4

I wasn't home last night so Mato played alone. She sent me a screen shot of her going 4 and 4, It's a 1.0, although it's low she was at least focusing on staying alive which is good in Slayer.  This morning I checked her stats to see how well she had done and she went down to a .36 k/d (.39).  She also went down to a .44 w/l (.45).    So I called her and I asked her simply "Did you have more fun last night than you normally do?". My thought was, if she enjoys herself then I'm not going to pressure her, I enjoy playing with her and her having fun is far more important than her having specific stats.  She told me that she didn't though, that it was frustrating for her.  She admitted she wasn't watching her radar as much as she normally does because she didn't feel the pressure from me being there.  Not feeling the pressure is good but because she wasn't focusing on it as much she was dying more frequently and she was getting more frustrated.  So I definitely think she has the desire to get better, I just don't know if I'm ideally the person to get her there in the long run.  For the time being I'm having fun working with her though and at some point I'll discuss with her getting additional help from more qualified people if needed and she desires.

We started out with the XBox that's in the bedroom on the 60" LCD in the living room.  But if you'll look through my past blog entries you'll see some posts about a television I bought for my office a while back and how it was rubbery or sluggish when I played.  The 60" has that same issue so we haven't been using it for gaming, and we usually end up watching movies in the bedroom because we can close the door to not disturb other people in the house.  so the 60" rarely gets used.  What I think I'm going to try this weekend is  I did finally find a game mode on it (because everything I read said it should have one, I *think* I found it, we'll see - It's a Sharp Aquos Quattron?) so I'm going to see if that works, if it does I'm going to move the 60" into the bedroom hook the hava into it and then we can game, watch movies better and record our games too! I'll take pics if I do it.  But I will for sure get some videos this weekend of Mato if anyone is interested.  At the least I'd like to log her progress for our own personal future reference if anything else so feel fee to come along for the ride if you'd like to. :)

On another topic - the guys I used to play "competitive" halo 3 with (I quoted it because we were horrible, lost every game on GameBattles we played) is getting back together and going to start practicing on Sunday nights so I may have some stuff to post about it in the near future.

Hey, toc. Suggest to her she should think of the radar as a rearview mirror, like when she's driving. She doesn't need to focus on it all the time, but once every 10 secs or so should be enough for her to get into the habit. Tell her to stick the outer  edges of the map in slayer game and shoot anything she sees, even if she can't kill it. Her assists will improve dramatically. Also tell hernin objective games, dying doesn't matter, winning does. If she goes 2-28 in a ctf game, but she caps the flag twice, she's helping out. Often times the worst shooter is the best player to carry flags or bombs.

running away after she gets hit is also a good idea. If she isn't the first one to get a shot off, tell her to shoot twice, then run away behind cover and stay alive. She's not going to win that gun fight anyway.

sounds like she's getting better, but paying attention to her k/d might not be an appropriate measure of her skills this early. Focus on her deaths and if she's dying with any grenades still on her. She should be shooting a lot too, to make sure she's at least somewhat in the action. The kills will come when she's comfortable with the self-preservation part.

That's exactly what I told her (rear view mirror) that's awesome someone else thinks that too! :) Last thing I told her was keep an eye for red. red on screen, run away, dot on radar, pay attention to it. Last night I saw her turning when I'd see a dot on the screen so I know she's aware, but she has a tendency to focus on what's going on the screen and getting melee'd in the back.  As far as running away she's stubborn and she really wants to fight that battle haha. She'll stay in one spot not moving for too long until people come after her and then wonder why they came after her.  I try to explain to her that she was stationary on their radar for a long period of time and she became a focus for them.  She doesn't fully understand but she will.

Her W/L is ultimately my highest priority but we currently only play Slayer variants.  I do try to focus more on ka/d though, if her ka/d is positive I'm happy.  Right now in Slayer she's not really helping her team very much overall, but you're right keeping her deaths down at least makes her not the k/d reason for the loss.

So this is what I will do based on your suggestions - I've already told her to "live first kill second" but I'll try to reinforce that.  I haven't told her to stick to the outside which I know is a valuable tip so I will work on that with her too.  And maybe we'll try some objective games.  Thanks!
