COD: MW2 Sells Over 20 Million Map Packs

Update: Is this the real reason Kotick is pushing for pay-to-play? Video game mogul Kotick loses fight with top Hollywood litigator. I'm sure it's not, but it would be pretty funny if you boiled away the water and this is ultimately what you find at the bottom of the pot.

Activision Blizzard released that the company has sold over 20 million map packs since the quarter ending June 30, 2010.

Needless to say this company is doing very well during the worse economic time since the Great Depression. COD has earned Activision Blizzard $3 billion alone and it's still the most successful selling game to date in the United States and Europe. With the news of selling this many map packs, it's only inevitable that the company will eventually start the insane idea of paying-to-play.

The question is, when will they start to do this? It's already been reported that neither game, COD: MW2 and Black Ops, are scheduled to fall into that category of greedy gaming, but there is a hint of a Call of Duty MMO possibly in the near future. Remember Activision’s Bobby Kotick saying this at a recent Morgan Stanley Technical Conference?

While a Call of Duty MMO may be a long way off, if it ever gets off the ground, it’s starting to sound like Activision execs may be giving it serious thought and we’d expect it to be a big focus for the publisher’s ad revenue model.

An MMO would be fine, but if they start charging in addition to buying the actual game, that's where I draw the line. With the success of this franchise I can understand why the suits want what World of Warcraft has, but they better respect and listen to the fans when it comes to platform gaming and pay-to-play don't mix.
