Aslan...The Final Chapter

The ride is over. Last week I had to put my boy down. By far, the hardest thing I ever had to do. Aslan lived for 15 years 3 months, a good run for a golden. The last 5 weeks he had diarrhea and was not eating enough. He spent several days in the dog hospital before coming home and the vets suspected cancer. At his age I did not want to put him through sedation for a scope, or chemo treatments for 28 consecutive weeks. Nutrients were not being absorbed by his body and he was losing about 2 pounds a week. I was sustaining him by giving him sub q fluids daily to keep him hydrated and letting him eat anything he would want…usually steak, dog treats and tuna. I worked from home the last couple weeks to take care of him.  The last few days of his life he would no longer play with his ball, get up on his own or want to go outside to go the bathroom (unless I carried him to the edge of the yard so he would walk back to the house).  Getting pooped on a couple times by your dog is highly recommended.   He still only went twice in the house (on a towel and once walking to the door)...he was so awesome.  He lost his joy, and I knew it was time. I did everything thing I could, but in the end it was not enough. He was constantly by my side, even went to work with me. I could not add the hours I spent with him over the years. I do not have a wife or kids…I had him. He blessed me for over 15 years and will be sorely missed.  I'm glad many of you got to meet him.

Sorry for your loss Sparhawk. I know what you're feeling. I lost my dog to cancer about 3 years ago. That memory of his last morning, trotting out to greet me with his tail wagging still haunts me now. There are times when that memory still makes me think I betrayed him. But we both did what we had to do. In fact, that is the last thing you can do for them. Although there will never be another Aslan, there is a world full of dogs out there that will give you unconditional love. I know it's easy to remember the shit from the last 2 months of his life but there were also 15 wonderful years. Try to focus on those. We have got a new dog when one of ours has died. They will never replace the one that has been lost but they are all their own little characters, and dead easy to love. The loss gets easier with time - Hope it doesn't take too long for you buddy.

I'm so sorry, Spar. He was such a good dog, and so welcoming to all of us crazies in your house the last 3 years. (And very photogenic, may I add!!) He will be greatly missed. Big hugs to you.
