Someone You Should Know

Normally, the soldiers, Marines, airmen, and sailors I post about in this blog are people I have never met.  This one is the exception.

Galen was my Sunday School teacher (for adults) at the Church I attend.  He did this while going to Seminary school.  Upon graduation of Seminary school, he felt convicted to join the Army and be a Chaplain to the soldiers.

He was accepted with the caveat that upon completion of his training and Chaplain's school, he would be deployed immediately to a combat unit in Iraq.  He didn't waver in his resolve to continue upon the path he chose.

Is Galen a hero?  No.  Not in the sense where he showed personal bravery in the face of enemy fire and what not.  But, to me, he is more then that.  He is following his convictions and not wavering in the face of personal danger.  He is leaving his wife and newborn child behind.  He didn't have to.  But he felt that he needed to.

He, like so many other military people make this sacrifice day in and day out, and they deserve more from this country then what they are getting.

Galen saying good-by to Luke
