Puppycide

Well, not in this instance, but I'm getting tired of reading more and more stories of Cops shooting dogs when they are raiding the wrong house, or when the dogs really don't pose a dangerous risk.

This is agonizing to watch:

I support the police, but they need to evaluate thier training and adjust it to find better ways to deal with family pets.

- Ohio family returns home to find cops tased, then shot and killed their five pound Chihuahua mix after it escaped from the back yard.

- Juvenile chased by cops runs into friend’s house to escape. Cops enter home, shoot family’s pet Akita 13 times.

- Police in West Virginia shoot a dog properly on its leashed after it got into a fight with a police K9 dog that was untethered.

- Police in Howard County, Maryland conducted a nighttime, no-knock raid on the home of Mike Hasenei, whom they apparently suspected of stealing items from two police cars burglarized last month. They found nothing, but they did shoot and kill Hasenei’s Australian cattle dog. The police say the no-knock raid and tactical entry were necessary because Hasenei is a (legal) gun-owner.

- Garland, Texas police officer responds to a noise complaint. Instead of knocking on the front door, he walks around to the back of the house. There, he claims the leashed dog, while in its own yard, “attacked” him, so he shot and killed it. The police department now says the officer wasn’t aware that the dog was on a leash.

- This one was 10 months old and leashed when the officer apparently entered the wrong backyard, then shot and killed it.

- Police serving a search warrant in Haltom City, Texas say an officer had no choice but to shoot and kill an “aggressive”–wait for it–Jack Russell terrier.

- Georgia police officer responds to false security alarm, shoots and kills family’s black lab in the backyard.

And the stories go on and on...

i could understand a big dog, or a pit or a rotti or mastif or akita if they are unleashed but in there own home and or in their yard is inexcusable.

Sounds like they're using the scene with Sir Lancelot from Monty Python and the Holy Grail for their training videos. The part where he charges into the wedding and kills everything he sees with his sword. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBnL4Rj6V8M Relevant bit starts around 6:30 "Now now, let's not bicker and argue about who killed whom. This is supposed to be a happy occasion!"

I've been charged (and bit) by roaming unleashed dogs while out riding my bike or running and that will put the fear of God into you right quick. Has pretty much made me scared of roaming big dogs...its funny because owners always insist "she wont bite, she's just saying hello"...and it seems like that is always the precursor in dog biting stories...dog has never bit anyone. Shooting someones dog in a home is a tough call. If it's charging me with teeth out as a cop, I think I would shoot rather than wait till it had its teeth in my guts, but thats just me. Tough subject though. Doubt there is a right answer.

You kidding right? None of these shitbags are being held accountable? I have had to shoot a couple of dogs in my life, I didn't want to, but I had to. 1 was attacking my mother's mare and foal, and the other was a wild dog that had attacked a teenage girl on horseback in a riverbed by my house. Again not a whole lot of choice. But these incidents don't include wild animals, these are family pets. WTF I have several friends that are in law enforcement, so I get told about how tense the job is, but tazing and then shooting a five lb dog. There is no excuse, I can control a five pound dog. I might get bit one time, and I don't have a tazer.

all i am saying is if my dog is defending its home and it is shot, shit will definately hit the fan. especially if the cops burst in my home unannounced. I mean the dog is only doing what they know at that point and it is protecting you. And i don't care who you are or what you say about it, my dogs are part of my family and I WILL DEFEND my family with deadly force!!!!! Cops need a psych eval before they are hire to see if they are dog killers like Mike fuckbag Vick. But if a cop shoots a dog needlessly, they should be fired immediately.

Oh and what's with the policy on no knock raids on legal gun owners? Seems like its not the legal gun owners that we need to worry about. Like that guy that killed 3 cops and wounded more in Philly with an AK 47- not legal gun. The laws of this country make no sense. In the words of Carlin, "We live in a country where they want to ban toy guns, but keep the fucking real ones!"

I've been charged by large dogs while out cycling when I was a kid. My cousin was bitten by a dog and needed quite a few stitches in her thigh. I'm rather uncomfortable around large dogs these days, even as an adult. I don't believe I would ever shoot a dog, even it if was attacking me, and certainly not if I were in it's territory. My cousin was attacked because she stopped a group of kids from poking and hitting the dog with sticks. She later played with the dog when she was better. I was almost over-taken by the rotti while I was cycling, but I managed to get away and never changed my path in later days. I believe that people killing pets should be treated the same as those who kill people. Maybe it's because I care more about animals than people :)

I shot two dogs once. I was out in an open area with my dogs and the owner was coming the opposite direction. About 100 yards out I leashed my dogs. About 75 yards out I stopped and yelled that he needed to leash his dogs. He kept coming. 50 yards out he gave a command and the two dogs (Rottweilers) took off running straight at me and my two leashed dogs. At about 15 yards I dropped them both with one-handed shots as I was also controlling my two dogs with my left hand. I wish I could have shot the owner. It wasn't the dogs fault.
